Eagles Snap RedHawks' 10-Game Winning Streak
YPSILANTI, Mich.
– Behind a strong pitching performance from 2006 Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Year Jeff Fischer, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team spoiled Miami University’s return to Oestrike Stadium with a 3-1 victory over the RedHawks in Mid-American Conference action here Friday afternoon. The game marked the first time the Eagles hosted Miami since the teams played a doubleheader April 4, 1999. The vicotry of also snapped Miami’s 10 game winning streak which was the third longest active winning streak in the nation.Fischer (2-3) went a strong 7.2 innings allowing one run on three hits while striking out 10. After allowing a hit in the top of the first inning, Fisher did not allow another RedHawk hit until the eighth. Sophomore Matt Shoemaker recorded the last four outs to notch his fifth save of the season.
For the game, EMU (8-12, 6-1 MAC) notched three runs on seven hits leaving only five runners on base. Miami (17-10, 6-1 MAC) tallied one run on four hits while stranding 10 on the basepaths.
Senior Patrick Dean led the Eagles’ offense going 2-for-3 at the plate, including an RBI single. Junior Josh Ivan and sophomore Aaron Powell each went 1-for-3 with a run batted in.
Miami sophomore Chris Nadeau went 1-for-3 from the plate and recorded the RedHawks only RBI of the day while junior John Ely struck out four in eight innings of work on the mound.
After a scoreless first three innings EMU stuck first in the bottom of the forth. A lead-off double by junior Jeff Hehr was followed by a Dean RBI single two batters later that gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, a missplayed fly ball turned into an RBI double for Ivan. A Powell single added another run to give EMU a 3-0 lead before Miami could get out of the inning.
The RedHawks were able to get on the board in the eighth. With two outs and a runner on first base, Nadeau singled to left field to cut the lead to 3-1. After another single and a hit batter loaded the bases, Shoemaker was called into the game to get the Eagels out of the jam. J.D. Mynhier laced a line drive which could have tied the game but was snagged by a lunging Ivan to get the Eagles out of the inning.
The Eagles and RedHawks will square off in the second game of the series Saturday, April 7 at Oestrike Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
