Kevin Sikora picks up first-career win on the mound for the Eagles
YPSILANTI, Mich.
– The Eastern Michigan University baseball team tallied its second consecutive home victory with a 10-3 win over Northwood University in non-conference action here Monday night at Oestrike Stadium.Eastern (9-12, 6-1 MAC) recorded 15 hits which was its second highest output of the season and got a solid performance from its pitching staff led by senior George Biddle and freshman Kevin Sikora (1-0). Biddle stared the game going 4.0 innings with seven strikeouts for a no decision while Sikora picked up his first career win allowing only one run on a hit with five strikeouts in 3.0 innings of work.
EMU was led offensively by sophomore Aaron Powell who went a perfect 2-for-2 with a run scored and three RBI courtesy of a three run home run. Junior Jeff Davis also had productive night going 3-for-5 at the plate with a run scored and pitched 1.0 innings with two strikeouts. Senior Brian Blackburn went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored while junior Jeff Hehr hit 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Freshman Robert Wendzicki also went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Northwood (11-12, 1-6 GLIAC) was led by junior Matt Shields who went 1-for-3 with a run scored and a two-run home run. Senior Joe Ashdown picked up the loss on the mound allowing five runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.
Neither team could get on the board during the first four innings. EMU finally broke the scoring drought in the bottom of the fifth inning as Josh Ivan crossed the plate first on a wild pitch. Blackburn then notched an RBI single to left field to score Hehr. With runners on first and second, Powell delivered a towering shot over the left field fence to drive in three runs and give Eastern a 5-0 lead.
Northwood got on the board in the top of the sixth inning with a RBI double by Justin Ford which cut into the lead at 5-1. However, EMU responded in the bottom half of the inning as Hehr singled to left field to score Mike Boyd. Another RBI single by Blackburn plated Derek Lehrman and Hehr to give the Eagles a commanding 8-1 lead.
EMU added a pair of runs in the seventh inning off a Wendzicki single to plate Boyd and Mike Sacha for a 10-1 lead.
The Timberwolves added two runs in the eighth on Shields’ home run but the outcome was already decided as EMU went on the secure a 10-3 victory.
EMU continues non-conference play with a seven-inning doubleheader against cross-town rival Michigan Tuesday, April 10. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. with the second game following approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
