Baseball Drops Doubleheader Against Michigan

Eagles suffer first home loss of the season
YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped a seven-inning doubleheader, 11-4 and 9-1, against cross-town rival University of Michigan in non-conference action here Tuesday night at Oestrike Stadium.
Eastern (9-14, 6-1 MAC) had no answer for the U-M (18-6) pitching staff as the Eagles’ offense only generated five runs and 11 hits in two games. Conversely, Michigan had its way with the EMU staff pounding out 20 runs on 28 hits in its two victories.
Game one remained competitive until U-M notched six unanswered runs in the top of the sixth inning blow the game open. EMU was led by sophomore Aaron Powell who went 2-for-3 with a RBI and run scored while senior Trumaine Riley also hit 2-for-3 with a RBI. Senior Adam Jacobson (0-1) pick up his first loss of the season going 1.1 innings allowing three runs (two earned) on one hit.
U-M was led by Zach Putnam who went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and four RBI off a couple of two-run home runs. Chris Fetter picked up the mound for the Wolverines allowing three runs on four scattered hits with two strikeouts in 2.0 innings of work.
Michigan got on the board first in the top of the third inning as Putman hit is first home run with a man on to give Wolverines a 2-0 lead. EMU cut the lead in half at 2-1 in the bottom of the inning off a Jeff Hehr RBI single to plate Jeff Davis from third base.
Eastern took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as Riley singled to right center field to score Patrick Dean followed by Powell scoring on a throwing error on the pitcher in a pick-off attempt to give the Eagles a 3-2 advantage.
U-M regained the lead on a two-run single by Derek VanVuskirk and a RBI double from Kevin Cislo to go up, 5-3. EMU once again pulled with in one run, 5-4, on a Powell single to the pitcher to score Hehr.
The turning point of the game came in top of the sixth inning as Putman hit his second two-run home run of the game to put U-M up 7-4. With two outs, the Wolverines rallied for four more runs on six hits coupled with an Eagle error to take a commanding 11-4 lead that they would not relinquish.
Game two was not much of a contest as U-M jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and added two runs in the third and another four in the sixth to take 9-0 lead. In fact, EMU was held hitless until Mike Boyd notched the Eagles’ first hit of the game on a double down the left field line in the bottom of the sixth inning. Powell grounded out to the shortstop to plate Boyd for EMU’s only run of the game in the 9-1 defeat.
Boyd and Kyle Rhoad both led EMU going 1-for-1 at the plate while Corey Chaffins (0-2) picked up his second loss going 5.0 innings with three strikeouts allowing five earned runs on eight hits.
Michigan was led offensively Nate Reckagel who went 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored. Mike Wilson (4-0) remained perfect on the season picking up the win going 5.0 innings allowing no hits with five strikeouts.
EMU continues non-conference play with a game against Wayne State Tuesday, April 10. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
