Eagles honor seniors Annie Malatinsky, Patrice McKinney and Sarah VanMetre

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The Eastern Michigan University women’s basketball program put a wrap on its 2006-07 season Saturday evening, April 21, with its annual awards banquet at Washtenaw Country Club. Five postseason team awards were handed out with All-MAC selections Patrice McKinney and Sarah VanMetre sharing the Most Valuable Player Award.

Other award winners included freshman Carla Warren taking home the Most Improved Player Award and freshman Emily Hanley garnering the Hustle Award. McKinney and sophomore Kendra Gallert shared the Defensive Player of the Year Award. The final honor of the night was given to senior Annie Malatinsky who picked up the Coaches Award for the second consecutive season.

EMU posted a 16-13 overall record and finshed second in the MAC West Division with a 10-6 mark.
Even though the season did not equal the record-setting win totals of the previous three 20-plus victory campaigns, EMU did have plenty of noteworthy accomplishments.

VanMetre became the first women’s basketball player in program history to be named an Academic All-American, McKinney was named the MAC Defensive Player of the Year and freshman Alyssa Pittman was named the MAC Freshman of the Year. Another significant milestone was head coach Suzy Merchant picked up her 200th career win with a victory against Morehead State and days later became the winningest coach in EMU history with a victory over Detroit, passing Kathy Hart with 147 wins.
