Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader at Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio. – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team opened Mid-American Conference play sweeping a doubleheader with Bowling Green State University here Saturday afternoon at Steller Field. The Eagles scored 21 runs on 22 total hits winning 10-2 and 11-8.

In the opener, senior George Biddle (1-3) went 7.0 innings with four strikeouts allowing only two runs to pick up his first victory of the year. In game two, junior Jeff Fischer (1-3) also picked up his first win of the year with six strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work.

Sophomore Todd Graves led EMU (4-11, 2-0 MAC) offensively going 4-for-8 with two homeruns, four RBI and two runs scored. Senior Patrick Dean also went 4-of-7 from the plate with three RBI and three runs scored. Bowling Green (10-10, 0-2 MAC) was led by Brian Hangbers who went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.

In the opener, Eastern built a 2-0 lead as Graves homered to right field to drive in Dean in the top of the second inning.

Bowling Green tied the game at 2-2 with runs in the bottom of the third and fourth innings.

EMU retook the lead, 3-2, in the top of the sixth inning as Dean reached on a fielder’s choice to drive in Jeff Hehr.

In the next frame, the Eagles took a commanding 7-2 lead with four runs on three hits and two Falcon errors highlighted by a RBI double by Hehr and RBI singles from Derek Lehrman and Dean.

The Eagles went on to add another three runs in the final two innings to cruise to a 10-2 victory.

In game two, EMU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Dean and a RBI single from Graves.

Bowing Green cut into the lead in the bottom of the second inning with a Hangbers homerun to pull within two, 3-1.

Eastern added a run in the fourth on a Josh Ivan RBI single and pored in on with four more runs on four hits in the next inning to take a 8-1 lead.

The Falcons added another two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning cutting EMU’s lead to 8-3.

However, the Eagles pushed ahead 11-3 on a two-run homer by Graves in the top of the seventh inning. Bowling Green responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame and added another three in the ninth but it was not enough as EMU held on for the 11-8 victory.

The Eagles and Falcons conclude the series Sunday afternoon, March 25, at 1 p.m.
