ORLANDO, Fla. — The Eastern Michigan University softball team was swept by the University of Central Florida, here Thursday night at the UCF Softball Complex. The Golden Knights took game one 4-2 and the nightcap, 7-4. Senior Lindsay Schmid hit her second home run of the season and 10th of her career, moving her into a three-way tie for fifth on the EMU career home run list.
With the sweep EMU falls to 1-10, while the Golden Knights improve to 13-8. Today’s game marked the first time that the two schools have squared-off on the diamond.
In game one, the Eagles registered four hits and reached base on four walks and two it batters. Senior Aimee Woodrum (0-3) pitched the complete game in the loss, recording three strikeouts.
Two doubles and a single up the middle accounted for two Golden Knight runs in the bottom of the opening frame, 2-0.
The Eagles notched their first run on the scoreboard in the third inning. Junior Jessica Grant led-off the inning with a single to centerfield. She later scored off an RBI single off the bat of junior Heather Giroux, cutting the lead to 2-1.
UCF added another run in the bottom half of the third on three singles, extending the Golden Knight advantage to 3-1.
In the fourth, Schmid blasted a solo shot over the leftfield fence. EMU proceeded to load the bases later in the fourth when control problems haunted UCF pitchers. Two walks and a hit batter filled the bases, but a 1-2-3 double play ended the threat with USF still up 3-2.
The Golden Knights matched the Eagles again in the home half of the fourth adding another run, taking advantage of a triple to right-centerfield by Ashley Van Ryn, 4-2.
Grant reached first on an error to start the seventh inning and freshman Jill Jozefowicz reached first after being hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced when junior Ashley Strauss was thrown out at first after a slow roller to the catcher and a bang-bang play at first. A strikeout and a grounder would end the inning and the game leaving the tying run on base.
In the nightcap, UCF scored in their half of the inning through the first four innings, accounting for six runs. The 2-3-4 hitters for EMU each posted two hits in the game. Giroux posted a 2-for-4 game, scoring two runs. Senior Lauren Clark went 2-for-4, scoring and knocking in a run. Sophomore Heather Han knocked in two runs for the Eagles.
