Eagles’ six run fifth not enough to victory

EMU-Villanova box score

ATLTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. — The Eastern Michigan University softball team fell to Villanova University, 8-6, here Friday afternoon during the Altamonte Springs Tournament at Merrill Park. Costly errors hurt the Eagles’ chances for victory, committing four errors in a game that lasted nearly two and a half hours.

With the loss EMU falls to 1-11, while Villanova stays perfect at 6-0.

Juniors Ashley Strauss and Jessica Grant each posted two hits for the Eagles and freshman Jenny Scherer knocked in two runs.

Freshman pitcher Michelle Hletko pitched four and 1/3 innings and allowed three earned runs. Senior Aimee Woodrum came in relief and tossed the final inning and 1/3, striking out three batters,

Senior Lauren Clark led-off the game with a walk. She was advanced to third on one-out single by Strauss. But both runners were stranded after back-to-back strikeouts ended the inning.

Three consecutive two-out RBI singles by the Wildcats put VU up 3-0 after the first frame. Villanova added another run in the second off a double down the leftfield line, gave the Wildcats a 4-0 advantage after two.

For the season, the Eagles have been outscored 35-2 over the first two innings and 21-2 in the opening frame.

The Eagles loaded the bases in the third after back-to-back two-out singles by Strauss and senior Lindsay Schmid and a walk to Scherer. But a fly out to centerfield ended the inning without plating a run.

The Wildcats extended their lead in the third after a sacrifice fly to left, 5-0.

EMU took the lead with a six run fourth inning. All nine batters reached base in a row starting with one-out singles by juniors Lindsay Ritz and Stephanie Sabo. Clark walked, loading the bases. A wild pitch advanced all runners, scoring Ritz. Junior Heather Giroux knocked in a run with a single. A walk to Strauss loaded the bases for Schmid. An infield error allowed Schmid to reach first and all runners to advance. Scherer knocked in two runs with a single to right centerfield. Sophomore Heather Han walked to load the bases once more. A single by Grant knocked another run, but Scherer was called out a third base. A line out to the shortstop ended the inning with the Eagles leading 6-5.

The Wildcats retook the lead in the fifth off a two-run home run to right field by Meghan Morese, 7-6. An EMU error led to UV’s final run of the game.

The Eagles (1-11) will continue participating in the Altamonte Springs Tournament later today (March 2) with a single game with the University of South Alabama. First-pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
