Softball Drops Two to USF

TAMPA, Fla. — The Eastern Michigan University softball team was swept by the University of South Florida, here Tuesday night at the USF Softball Field. The Bulls took game one 8-0 in five innings and the nightcap, 7-6. Senior pitcher Aimee Woodrum recorded a career-high nine strikeouts in relief during game two, giving her 207 for her Green and White career. She became just the seventh player in EMU softball history to record over 200 strikeouts.
With the sweep EMU falls to 1-8, while the Bulls improve to 13-6. Today’s game marked the 11th and 12th meeting all-time between EMU and USF, and third and fourth the season. USF took all four games this season and holds an 8-4 advantage all-time.
In game one, senior Kelly Tomczak (1-1) threw four and 1/3 innings, picking up the loss. Four different Eagles singled in the game, accounting for all four hits.
The Eagles led-off the game with back-to-back singles by juniors Ashley Strauss and Heather Giroux. Later in the inning, senior right fielder Lindsay Schmid walked to load the bases, but a groundout with end the inning without a runner scoring.
The Bulls also loaded the bases to no avail in their half of the inning. Back-to-back walks and a hit batter put runners on each base but a force out at home followed by a groundout, ended the inning scoreless, 0-0.
An error an on overthrown ball to first base allowed a USF base runner, who reached on a walk, to cross the plate and break the scoreless tie in the second inning, 1-0.
Another Eagle error on a dropped fly ball followed by USF’s first hit of the game, a single through the left side of the infield, gave the Bulls a 2-0 advantage. Later in the inning, USF loaded the bases once again, but an amazing diving catch by Giroux in centerfield ended the inning leaving all three runners stranded.
The Bulls busted the game open in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by walk-off grand slam by Aya Nakajima, with a six run inning to end the game
In the nightcap, Giroux recorded her first multi-hit game of the season going 3-for-4. Sophomore Heather Han each registered three RBI and two hits and senior Lauren Clark had two hits and two RBI.
Freshman Michelle Hletko (0-2) pitched the first one and 1/3 innings allowing just two hits but walked five batters. Woodrum came on in relief once again throwing the final four and 2/3 innings, recording a career-high nine strikeouts, allowing just two hits.
EMU put two on with back-to-back singles by Giroux and Clark once again in the first. But a double play kept the game scoreless.
Hletko started first by striking out the side, but she lost some control in the second with four consecutive walks followed by back-to-back RBI singles. A throwing error on an attempted force out at home, plated two more runs. A double off the leftfield wall scored the final two runs of the inning, putting USF up 7-0.
EMU scored its first run of the game on a bases loaded infield single by junior Lindsay Ritz in the fourth, cutting the lead to 7-1.
The Green and White started the fifth with junior Stephanie Sabo reaching on an error and Strauss singling up the middle. Sophomore catcher Heather Han ripped an RBI single to leftfield, scoring Sabo, 7-2.
The Eagles cut the lead to one in the sixth after scoring four two-out runs. Back-to-back singles by Strauss and Giroux followed by consecutive doubles by Clark and Han, cut the lead to 7-6.
In the seventh, Ritz walked but a double play ended the game.
The Eagles (1-8) will continue its tour of the state of Florida traveling to Orlando, Fla. Thursday, March 1, for a doubleheader with the University of Central Florida. The first game is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. at the UCF Softball Complex.
