GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Eastern Michigan University softball team was swept by #19 University of Florida, here Monday night at the UF Softball Stadium. The Gators took game one 4-0 and the nightcap 9-1 in six innings.
With the sweep EMU falls to 1-6, while the Gators improve to 16-5. Today’s game marked the meeting all-time between EMU and UF.
In game one, senior Aimee Woodrum (0-2) went all six innings allowing six hits. She struck out four batters, leaving her two away from becoming the seventh player in EMU history to record 200 career strikeouts.
The Eagles managed just two hits in the contest with senior Lindsay Schmid and sophomore Heather Han each reaching on singles.
A lead-off single by UF’s Kim Waleszonia, followed by a double by Lauren Roussell plated the first run of the game. Woodrum settled down to retire the next three Gator batters in succession, with UF leading 1-0.
Schmid recorded the Eagles’ first hit of the game, in the top half of the second inning, a single to leftfield. However, she was doubled-up at first base on a quick line drive to the second baseman ending the inning, 1-0.
A three-run home run to leftfield by Francesca Enea in the third finished the scoring, giving the Gators the 4-0 victory.
In the nightcap, freshman Jenny Scherer registered her first career multi-hit game, cranking out two singles. Senior pitcher Michelle Lloyd (0-3) pitched the first two innings allowed five hits and striking out two Gators. Freshman Michelle Hletko threw the final three and 2/3 innings allowing just one hit.
Control problems plagued EMU as three walks, an illegal pitch and a throwing error allowed the Gators to bat around in the first. UF also cranked out three hits in the inning, all singles, to account for five first frame runs.
The Eagles threatened in the second after an error allowed Schmid to reach base and a single down the leftfield line by Scherer placed two on with no outs. But, EMU could not advance the runners as the next three batters were retired in order, leaving the score 5-0.
The Gators added two runs in the second frame, an RBI double by Melissa Zick, who later stole home, making the score 7-0.
Back-to-back singles by junior Heather Giroux and senior Lauren Clark in the third put bse runners at first and second, but the Eagles once again could not advance, keeping the score 7-0.
The Eagle got on the scoreboard in the fourth after Jill Jozefowicz reached first on a walk. She stole second and advances to third on an error. A failed pick-off attempt saw the ball travel into leftfield allowing Jozefowicz to cross the plate, 7-1.
The Gators added the final two runs of the game in the sixth on a bases loaded fall ball that was dropped.
The Eagles (1-6) will continue its tour of the state of Florida traveling back to Tampa, Fla. tomorrow, Feb. 27, for a doubleheader with the University of South Florida. The first game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at the USF Softball Field.
