YPSILANTI, Mich.-- The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team defeated Mid-American Conference foe Ball State University, 191.900 -189.450 Saturday night, Feb. 17, here at Warner Gymnasium.
With the win, the Eagles move to 4-4 overall (2-1 MAC), while the Cardinals drop to 1-7 (0-4 MAC).
The Eagles started the first rotation on the vault where they swept the top three places for an early lead over the Cardinals. Junior Tawna Bennett (Jacksonville, Fla-Edward White) won medalist honors with a season high score of 9.825 while Zu Vuong (Ottawa, Ontario-DelaSalle) finished second with a 9.725 and freshman Mickayla Balow (Blaine, Minn.-Spring Lake Park High) took third with a 9.675.
EMU would increase its lead by way of the uneven bars competition during the second rotation, claiming first and second place. Junior Jolene Worley (Orlando, Fla-William R. Boone) posted a 9.725 for the win, edging teammate Rebecca Fuss (Orlando, Fla-Dr. Phillips) who would tie for second with a 9.700.
On the beam Vuong would post a season high mark of 9.800 on her way to taking medalist honors while Fuss would capture second with a 9.650.
The Eagles would seal the victory on the floor routine, taking first and second place. Worley would pull through with a winning mark of 9.750, besting teammates Vuong and Balow who would tie for second with a 9.700.
The Eagles will be in action next Saturday, Feb. 24, as they travel to Columbia, Mo. to compete in the Missouri Cat Classic. The meet is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start time.
