Junior Katie Zundel and sophomore Ashley Rodrigues named to first team
CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Eastern Michigan University women’s soccer team had five members named to All-Mid-American Conference teams, the conference office announced today. Junior Katie Zundel and sophomore Ashley Rodrigues were named to the first team, while sophomore Maggie Christensen picked up second-team honors. Freshmen Stephanie Janssens and Maggie Manville were both selected to the All-Freshman team. It is the first time since 2002 that the Eagles have two players on the first team.
Zundel, a junior from Utica, Mich., started every game for the Eagles in the backfield. She was an integral part of a defense that allowed just 1.04 goals a game. Zundel also netted a game-winning header in a double-overtime 1-0 victory at Western Michigan and picked up an assist in a 7-1 win against Buffalo.
Rodrigues enjoyed a breakout sophomore campaign for the Eagles. After recording one goal and an assist during her freshman campaign, she upped both numbers during her second year. The Pickering, Ontario native scored six goals on the year, to go along with four assists. Her 16 total points led the team, while her six goals was tied for the team lead. Rodrigues ranks seventh all-time in goals scored in a season. The sophomore also became just the fourth player in school history to record a hat trick, when she scored three against Buffalo. She chalked up an assist in the 7-1 victory, totaling seven points on the day, setting a new single-game standard for EMU.
Christensen picked up from where she left off last year, en route to earning second team honors. After a freshman season that saw her score four goals and dish out three assists, the Orland Parks, Ill. native upped her goal total to six this season. She had two game-winning goals on the season, against IPFW and Bowling Green. In addition to her six goals, tied for the team lead, she recorded two assists to give her 14 points on the year.
Janssens and Manville are the first Eagles to make the All-Freshman squad since Sara Schiffbauer and Jill Kehler in 2004. Janssens started in all but two matches for the Eagles and led the team with eight assists on the season, tied for the second-highest season output in school history. The Novi, Mich. product also netted three goals on the year, including a game-winner against Kent State.
Manville, a freshman from Chelsea, Mich., is the first EMU goalkeeper to pick up all-freshman accolades. Manville, a starter in all 19 games, recorded a 1.04 goals against average for the season, good for second all-time in school history. Her .817 season save percentage ranks her fourth on the all-time list. Manville compiled 94 saves, while recording six shutouts on the year. She also played the third-most minutes in a season in EMU history, with 1,821:47.
EMU finished the season with a 7-8-4 record and a 5-4-2 record in MAC play. The Eagles made the MAC Tournament after missing it in 2006. EMU was the No. 5 seed before falling to host Bowling Green in overtime, 2-1. The tournament concludes this weekend in Muncie, Ind.
