DETROIT, Mich. – Behind six three-pointers from sophomore guard Alyssa Pittman, the Eastern Michigan University women’s basketball team picked up a 65-54 win over the University of Detroit Mercy Tuesday night in non-conference action here at Calihan Hall.
With the victory the Eagles up their record to 2-0 on the season and 7-10 all-time versus the Titans. On the other side of the court, Detroit remains winless at 0-3.
Pittman paced the Eagles with 26 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including a 6-of-11 showing from beyond the arc. The Elkhart, Ind. Native also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, while senior Brittany Tyson poured in 11 points. Sophomore Kelly Watts tallied nine second-half points and hauled down six boards.
Katy Dunlop’s nine points keyed the Titan attack in 20 minutes of action off the bench. Sandi Brown, Zemora Davis and Joyce Massey each chipped in eight points a piece for the Titans.
Turnovers plagued both teams on the night as the squads combined for 55 miscues (EMU 31, UDM 24). EMU shot 48 percent (20-of-41) on the night, compared to UDM 31 percent (21-of-67). The Green and White also had a slight advantage on the boards, 36-35.
Eastern Michigan led by as many as nine, 14-5, in the first half, but Detroit responded with six unanswered points to pull within three, 14-11, with 10:17 left to play in the half. A Detroit three-pointer with 7:29 remaining in the half got the Titans back within three, 19-16, but once again the Eagles were able to answer and head into the break with the 25-18 advantage.
Following the intermission, the Titans were able to cut the deficit to three, 27-24, in the opening minutes as Shawanna Stubblefield connected on a runner in the lane with 17:39 showing on the clock.
However, that would the closest that Detroit would get the rest of the way as the Eagles would go on a 12-3 run over the next four minutes to make the score 39-27 with 13:32 to play. The Green and White would extend their lead to 14 points, 56-42, with just under eight minutes remaining.
The Titans would have one final push to make the game close, cutting the deficit to seven, 59-52, on a pair of free throws in the closing minute. But once again EMU was able to answer, going 6-for-8 from the free-throw line to secure the 11-point victory.
The Eagles return to the friendly confines of the Convocation Center Saturday, Nov. 17, to battle Horizon League foe Wright State University at 2 p.m. The game will not have radio coverage, so the only way to follow the action will be via live stats on EMUEagles.com.
