YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University women’s basketball team improved to 3-0 on the season and 7-0 all-time versus Wright State University with a 74-41 victory Saturday afternoon in non-conference action here at the Convocation Center. Sophomore guard Alyssa Pittman paced the Eagles attack with 26 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including tying her career best with seven three-pointers in the victory.

For the game the Eagles shot a solid 48 percent (25-of-52) and an even better 61 percent from beyond the arc (11-of-18). As hot the as Eagles were, the Raiders were just as cold shooting, managing just 34 percent (16-of-46) shooting from the floor and 23 percent (3-of-13) from long-distance.

Balanced scoring was the case for EMU, as 12 of the 14 Eagles that played in the game scored. Besides Pittman’s 26 points, the only other Eagle to reach double figures was sophomore Kelly Watts, who nearly turned in a double-double, with 13 points and nine rebounds. Senior Brittany Tyson notched a game-best eight assists while junior Canea Williams tallied five off the bench.

Sheylani Peddy was the lone Wright State player to post double digits in points, accounting for 14 of the team’s 41 on the afternoon. Kanisha Ward poured in nine and Erica Richardson added six in a losing effort.

Both teams struggled offensively to out of the gate as WSU pulled out to an early 9-5 edge just six minutes into the contest. However the Eagles were starting to get into the flow, stringing together an 8-2 run to take a 13-11 lead with 7:36 remaining in the half.

The margin would grow to seven, 26-19, when Watts laid one off the glass just before the intermission as the squads headed to the lockerroom. Pittman led all scorers in the first 20 minutes with 14 points, while Peddy posted seven points.

Following the break the Raiders would cut the deficit to four, 28-24, as Richardson drained a three-pointer with 18:34 showing on the clock. That would be the closest the visitors would get the rest of the way, as junior Amber Land’s layup at the 14:36 mark capped a 16-0 run by the Eagles.

The momentum continued to fall in EMU’s favor as the advantage would grow to as many as 33 points, 73-40, when freshman Tara Johnson connected on a pair of free throws with :58 seconds to play.

Eastern Michigan hits the road for the next three games starting first at the Junkanoo Jam Friday, Nov. 23-24, in the Bahamas. The Green and White will tangle with Alabama in the first game and then will square off with either North Carolina State or Washington State in the finale. The games will not have radio coverage, so the only way to follow the action will be via on EMUEagles.com.
