Karanja Earns Individual Bid to the NCAA Championships

Karanja finished eighth at the Great Lakes Regional
INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee announced late last night the team and individual qualifiers for the 2007 Division I Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships and Eastern Michigan University’s men’s cross country runner Josh Karanja (Ottawa, Canada-Nepean) was selected to compete at the NCAA Championship Monday, Nov. 19.
Karanja was chosen after finishing eighth at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional held Saturday, Nov. 10. He ran the 10-kilometer race in a career-best time of 30:58.88.
Karanja has had a stellar 2007 season for the Eagles. He finished as the top runner five times this season and won the Western Ontario Invitational, Sept. 22. He finished third at the Mid-American Conference Championship and earned All-MAC honors for the third season in a row and also earned Academic All-MAC honors for the first time in his career. He was named MAC Runner of the Week two times this fall (Sept. 24 and Oct. 1).
The EMU men’s team just missed out on qualifying after finishing seventh as a team at the Regional meet. The top five teams in the Great Lakes Region were selected to compete. Michigan and Wisconsin received the two automatic bids while Notre Dame, Indiana and Ohio State received at-large bids to the NCAA Championships.
Indiana State University will host the 2007 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships, November 19, at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course located at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center, in Terre Haute, Indiana. The men’s race will begin at noon followed by the women’s race at 12:55 p.m.
