Eagles struggle in singles competition.

 
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Eastern Michigan University women’s tennis team traveled to Virginia Tech. to compete in the Hokie Fall Invitational this weekend. Day one of competition is in the books for the Eagles, who struggled in singles competition.

"I wasn't pleased with our lack of wins in singles, we are a better team than this, and the team needs to work harder to reach it, “said head coach Ryan Ray.  "Hopefully we can get back on track tomorrow."

In flight A, Senior Vanessa Frankowski (Stuttgart, Germany/Albertus Magus Gymnasium) was the lone Eagle to stay alive in singles competition and will go on to compete today. Friday, she beat Kristin Nimitz of James Madison University 6-2, 6-4. She goes on to take on Jessica Long of the host institution, Virginia Tech.

Freshman Sandra Wikstrom (Lodose, Sweden/Katrinelunds Gymnasiet), who was also in flight A, was defeated by Inga Beermann of Virginia Tech. 6-3, 6-2, in the first round of play. She went on to play Kelsey Linville of Davidson and fell 6-3, 6-3. She’ll go on to play another consolation round later today.

Flight B action saw freshman Alexandra Stankovic (Stockholm, Sweden/Walthers Gymnasium) in action who fell in the first round but gave her opponent, Teresa Wang of Davidson a tough battle. Wang took the first set, 6-1, before Stankovic fired back, winning 6-4, but Wang took the third set, 6-2. Stankovic then went on to face Eastern Tennessee State University and lost 6-3, 6-1. She goes on to face Yulia Kashelkina of Marshall Saturday.

Senior Aditi Krishnan (Markham,Ontario-Canada/Markvile Secondary School) also saw action in flight B and won her first round match against Camilia Noldin of Radford. She easily took the first set, 6-2, but Noldin held on but eventually fell in the second set 7-5. Krishnan then went on to play Alison Rauh of Davidson, falling 7-5, 6-0. She goes on to face Holy Johnson of Virginia Tech. later today.

Senior Tina Bestehorn (Ebenhausen, Germany/Icking Gymnasium) was the lone Eagle who saw action in flight C. She won her first round match, handing her opponent, Julie Voss of Ohio State a 1-6, 6-4, 7-6, loss. She then went on to face J.J. Larson of Virginia Tech. and lost 6-2, 7-5. She will face Stephanie Brown of Liberty University today at 12:30.
Flight D action saw Emma Czarnecki (Huntington Woods, MI/Berkley High School) fall inthe 
first round at the hands of Meredith Skeeters of Davidson 6-3, 6-4. She went on to play Whitney
Butcher of Elon and won in a three set thriller 5-7, 6-2, 10-4. She will play Chelsea Cramp of Virginia
Tech. this evening.

Junior Joanna Woo also saw action in flight D, losing her first round match to Kassie Moore of
Marshall University 6-3, 6-4. She goes on to play Barrett Donner of James Madison later today.

The final Eagle to take action in singles was senior Flavia Micati (Rio de Janerio, Brazil/
Cejo Terejopolis RJ)
who received a first round bye. She went on to play Fabiana Gouveia
and lost 3-6, 6-1, 10-4. She goes on to play Jessica Margolis of Elon later this afternoon.

In doubles action, Frankowski and Wikstrom received a first round bye and will go on to play
Dipastina and Keesey of Ohio State Saturday. Bestehorn and Stankovic took their opponents,
Wang and Whelen of Davidson to the limit, winning 9-7. They will play Beermann and Brouwer
of Virginia Tech. Saturday.

In flight B doubles, it was Czarnecki and Micati who teamed up to take on Trotter and Volobueva
of Eastern Tennessee and lost by a score of 8-5. They go on to play Lindsey and Price of Radford
in consolation later today.

Krishnan and Woo took on Stewart and Voinea of Eastern Tennessee and easily took the match
8-2. They will play the duo of Butcher and Kensrue of Elon later today.

Day two action begins bright and early Saturday at 9 a.m. Day one results and bracket can
