EMU heads to Bowling Green and Toledo

HERE I AM, ON THE ROAD AGAIN:
The Eagles will pack their bags once again this coming weekend as they open the month of October on the road. The Green and White will travel to Toledo, Ohio Friday, Oct. 5 to take on the Rockets who sport a 7-2-1 overall record and a perfect 2-0 Mid-American Conference mark. Sunday, Oct. 7, will be yet another MAC match-up with the Eagles taking on Bowling Green 4-5-1, 1-1 MAC at Bowling Green.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS: The Rockets enter this week’s match in the midst of a school record five match winning streak. UT opened MAC competition over the weekend posting wins over Western Michigan (4-0) and Northern Illinois (4-1). EMU has taken four of the past five matches from UT, and will look to avenge last year’s 2-1 defeat. Bowling Green has had EMU’s number for the past two seasons, winning 2-1 in 2005 and 1-0 last season. The Falcons opened up the MAC portion of their schedule with a 3-2 loss to Northern Illinois. BG was able to rebound in their next match, defeating Western Michigan by a score of 3-1.

SUPER SWEET SOPHOMORES: Sophomores Maggie Christensen and Katie Lozar are leading the way for the Eagles offense this year. Christensen, who has tallied a team high three goals on the year, is just one goal short of matching her total from last year. Lozar, who has collected two goals and two assists has already surpassed her point output from a year ago.

SCORING MEANS WINNING: The Eagles are a perfect 3-0 this season when scoring two or more goals in a game. When the Green and White fail to register at least two goals, they are 0-4-2.

LETS GO STREAKING: The Green and White have not lost their Mid-American Conference opener six years running now with a win on the road against Miami (OH) 2-1 on September 28. The streak dates back to the 2002 season.

KEEPING IT IN THE MAC: The Eagles went to Muncie, Ind. for an afternoon match on the pitch with the Cardinals of Ball State on Sunday, Sept. 30. Last year the Eagles were able to leave Muncie with a 2-1 overtime victory over the 2006 regular season champs, handing them one of only two losses in conference play. This year was a different story, with the Cardinals coming away with a 2-0 victory.

DOUBLE THE FUN: The Eagles have played in two double overtime contests in the past week, with both matches ending in a draw. At UC-Irvine, the Anteaters and Eagles put on a defensive display as they drew a 0-0 tie after 110 minutes. At home against the Jaguars, EMU was able to notch a second half goal and clamp down on the Jaguar offense to even the score at 1, where the match would end after the second overtime.

LOGGING THE MILES: The Eagles rounded out the month of September with road games at Miami (OH) and Ball State, their fifth and sixth road games of the month. EMU has traveled to Indiana twice, California and will travel to Ohio, racking up nearly 3,000 miles traveled this month.

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME: After spending the week of Sept. 10 on the road traveling to Fort Wayne, Ind. and then a weekend trip out west to California, the Eagles returned to the state of Michigan for the week. The Green and White traveled to East Lansing Wednesday, Sept. 19 to take on Big Ten foe Michigan State, dropping the match 2-0. EMU finally returned home for the first time since Sept. 4 to host IUPUI Saturday, Sept. 23, playing to a 1-1 2OT tie. The Green and White were only scheduled to play one home game during the month of Septermber, but played two when the Detroit game was moved to Scicluna Field at the beginning of the month. The Eagles hit the road to round out the month, traveling to Oxford, Ohio and Muncie Ind., concluding the month of September, having played six of eight away from home.

WIN, LOSE OR DRAW: The Eagles picked up one of each during the week of Sept. 10 after playing three road games. The week started off well for EMU, as they rolled past IPFW, 3-1. After allowing the first goal of the game to the Mastadons, the Eagles scored three unanswered goals by Katie Lozar, Maggie Christensen and Paige Sheridan. The Eagles headed out to California for the weekend, starting off at UC Riverside. The Green and White were not able to find the net, as they lost 2-1. Eastern finished the week recording a 2OT 0-0 tie. Freshman goalkeeper Maggie Manville recorded her second career shutout.

FIRST WIN: The Eagles chalked up their first win of the season with a 4-0 decision against Detroit, Sept. 4. After being held scoreless in the first half, the Green and White erupted with four goals in the second half. Freshman goalkeeper Maggie Manville notched her first career shutout, making five saves.

SPREADING THE POINTS AROUND: Against the Titans of Detroit, eight different players recorded points. Four different players scored goals, with another four players notching assists. Ashley Rodrigues, Sara Schiffbauer, Ashley Upton and Samantha Beard all found the back of the net, while Katie Lozar, Renee Farrell, Jessica Lathrop and Tessa Acker each received a point for the set-up.

13th SEASON BEGINS: The Eastern Michigan University women’s soccer team started the season off with a loss to the Panthers of Eastern Illinois University. The Eagles went into halftime with a 1-0 advantage, but EIU came back with three second half goals. Sophomore Maggie Christensen scored the Eagles’ lone goal off an assist from senior Sara Schiffbauer. The Eagles are now 8-4-1 in season openers.
