EAGLES COME HOME, START MAC PLAY: The Eagles are slated for a busy week which starts with a 3:30 p.m. contest in East Lansing against Big 10 conference member Michigan State, March 28. The following day EMU will host Detroit for a home opener double header at Varsity Field, with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. The Eagles will open Mid-American Conference play with a double header against Western Michigan, followed by back-to-back games with Northern Illinois, April 1-2. The Saturday, April 1, contest with Northern Illinois will be Family Day for EMU softball, with the parents and players being recognized before the 2 p.m. game.
NO-HITTER VERSUS MICHIGAN: Junior pitcher Michelle Lloyd threw the 10th no-hitter in EMU’s program history against the defending national champion and No. 12 ranked University of Michigan squad in a rare no-hit extra innings loss. She went 7.1 innings allowing zero hits and one unearned run in the bottom of the eighth.
EAGLES KNOCK OFF No. 21 LOUISVILLE: At the 2006 Louisville Classic, the Eagles handed the Cardinals just their fourth loss of the season with a 3-2 decision. Senior pitcher Nikki Denman pitched seven innings recording five strike outs in the upset. Sophomore outfielder Heather Giroux led the Eagle offense with a 2-for-4 day at the plate. She also knocked in and a scored a run.
EMU SWEEPS MAC WEEKLY AWARDS: Eastern Michigan University softball players swept the MAC West Division Player of the Week awards with shortstop Lauren Clark named MAC West Player of the Week, while junior pitcher Michelle Lloyd was named MAC West Pitcher of the Week. Clark batted .416 over the week with five hits, two doubles, two RBI, two walks, and stole her team leading sixth base. Lloyd pitched 10.1 innings with 12 strike outs allowing one earned run and gave up just four hits in two starts for the Eagles.
SWINGING AT HISTORY: Junior shortstop Lauren Clark has hit seven home runs this season and sits three round trippers behind the single-season home run record held by Melissa Drouillard who hit 10 in 1996 and teammate Nikki Denman who tied the record in 2004. Clark has put 13 over the fence in her career and is six behind Drouillard for the EMU career home run record of 19.
WALK-OFF HOME RUN: Freshman catcher Heather Han picked an opportune time to hit her first collegiate home run, as she hit a walk-off two run shot in the bottom of the seventh with two outs to give the Eagles a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Toledo.
