KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team (1-3) put up a valiant effort but fell short in a doubleheader versus the No. 8 ranked University of Tennessee Friday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. Both games turned out to be pitcher's duels as the Eagles came up short, losing 3-2 both times to the Vols.
Junior pitcher George Biddle notched a solid game on the mound in the opener, going eight innings, surrendering three runs on six hits while striking out three. Offensively, the Eagles tallied two runs and three total hits from sophomores Jeff Davis and Steve Bradshaw and junior Trumaine Riley against Tennessee’s formable pitching staff of All-American James Atkins, Craig Cobb and Sean Watson.
Much like the first game, the Eagles got a good pitching effort in the nightcap as sophomore Jeff Fischer tallied five strike outs with one earned run in eight innings of work. Davis hit 2-for-4 with one RBI while senior Matt Moffett went 2-for-5 to lead the Eagles.
In game one, Tennessee got on the board first on a J.P. Arencibia single which brought in Julio Burbon from third giving the Vols a 1-0 lead. EMU responded as sophomore Jeff Hehr scored on an Aaron Powell grounder tying the game, 1-1, in the top of the fourth. Tennessee pulled away for good in the sixth inning on a two-run homer by Michael Rivera increasing its lead to 3-1. The Eagles mounted a late rally in the top of the ninth as Bradshaw hit a single scoring Riley from third to pull EMU to within one, 3-2. That was as close as EMU would get, however, as UT closer Sean Watson was able to retire Powell and Derrek Lehrman ending the threat and the game, 3-2.
In game two the Vols once again jumped out to an early 3-0 lead through two innings. EMU responded on as Bradshaw once again drove in a run on a single to score Riley closing the gap to 3-1 in the third. Davis notched a single bringing home Lehrman in the sixth inning pulling EMU to within one, 3-2, but the Eagles couldn’t take advantage of a golden opportunity as Bradshaw grounded out with the bases loaded to end the inning. EMU would not score over the next three innings to fall, 3-2.
The series finale between UT and EMU is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 11, at 2 p.m.
