LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- In a back and forth game that lasted 13 innings and saw UNLV baseball battle back from a five-run deficit, Eastern Michigan spoiled the Rebels' home opener, winning 9-7 Friday night at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
The Rebels dropped to 1-8 on the year and Alex Chalfant (0-2) took the loss after he gave up a pair of runs in the top of the 13th inning that broke a 7-7 tie. EMU improved to 2-3 and Jeff Fischer (1-0) came out of the bullpen and pitched 6.2 solid innings to get the win while Jeff Davis picked up the save.
UNLV, playing its first home game of the season after opening up with eight-straight games on the road, got on the board first on an RBI single from Chris Bonnell that drove home CJ Lang.
But the Eagles answered with a pair of runs in the second inning and then added four more in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead. EMU used three hits and an error to plate their runs and three of them came on RBI singles.
Bonnell got the Rebels back into the game though just an inning later, drilling a two-run home run off the left-field light pole to cut the lead in half at 6-3. UNLV put two more runs on the board in that frame and then tied the game in the seventh when Willie Bowman scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-6.
The score stayed tied until the 10th inning, when the Eagles went back in front, thanks to two wild pitches from Rebel reliever Jabe Beard that allowed Steve Bradshaw to score. Blake Gailen quickly tied the game though, as the lefty hit his first home run of his UNLV career down the right field line to knot the game at seven.
After two scoreless innings EMU had runners on first and second with one out when Jeff Hehr singled in the go ahead run off of Chalfant. Matt Moffett then added a sacrifice fly that made the margin two at 9-7. Bonnell led off the bottom of the 13th with a walk, but then Bowman grounded into a double play and Ryan Bird struck out to end the game.
Bonnell finished the game 3-6 with three RBI and a run scored while Zach Borba as 3-4 at the plate with a RBI and a run scored. Bradshaw went 3-7for the Eagles and had a pair of RBI and runs scored.
UNLV and EMU continue their series Saturday afternoon with Rebel left hander Chris Saddoris slated to start against Eagle right hander Matt Dillard at 2:00 p.m. (PST) at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
