LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team suffered a 18-5 drubbing at the hands of UNLV this afternoon at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. The Rebels broke out offensively with season highs in runs and hits as the Eagles were never able to find an answer for the UNLV onslaught.
With the loss, the Eagles fall to 2-4 on the season while the Rebels improve to 2-8 overall.
Eastern Michigan was led offensively by freshman Aaron Powell who went 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored in the setback. Sophomore Steve Bradshaw tallied two runs scored and picked up an RBI on a 2-for-4 performance from the plate. Junior Matt Dillard (0-1) suffered his first lost of the season.
The Rebel’s Mike Cruz finished the game 4-5 with three RBI and a run scored while Chris Bonnell, Braden Walker and Chad Miller each had two hits. Seven other Rebels had hits in the game and a total of 12 UNLV base runners crossed home plate, led by Walker’s four runs.
EMU got off to a good start in the second inning with a Powell RBI single to score Bradshaw to give the Eagles the early 1-0 lead. That advantage did not last long as UNLV’s bats exploded with four runs in the bottom of the second and third innings to take a commanding 8-1 lead.
UNLV left hander Chris Saddoris (2-2) was the benefactor of the offensive explosion, throwing six strong innings and striking out five to pick up the win. Saddoris, who has both of UNLV’s wins, did not need much run support, as he limited EMU to two runs on four hits.
Eastern tacked on one run in the sixth on a Bradshaw grounder. Eastern tacked on three runs in the ninth inning, but it was not enough as the Rebels already had the game in control as they took the middle game of the three game series by a score of 18-5.
The series finale between UNLV and EMU is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 26, at 2 p.m. PST.
