CINCINNATI, Ohio- -The Eastern Michigan University football team came up with a great team effort on both sides of the ball but that strong performance fell just short in a 28-26 loss to the University of Cincinnati here Thursday, Sept. 1, in the season opener for both squads.
The Eagles set up a last-gasp effort with a great defensive stop at midfield with just under one minute left in the game.
Facing a fourth-and-one from its own 48-yard line, a Cincinnati off-tackle rushing try was turned away by a fired up EMU defense, giving the Eagles the ball back at the Bearcats' 48 with 00:51 left on the clock.
Senior quarterback Matt Bohnet (Grand Ledge, Mich.-Grand Ledge) found Eric Deslauriers Gatineau, Quebec, Canada-Lennoxville College Prep) for a six-yard passing play. That was followed by an incompletion, then another three-yard pass to Deslauriers, leaving EMU just a yard short of keeping the ball.
With the situation just out of junior placekicker Andrew Wellock's (North Canton, Ohio-Green) range, the Eagles had one last play but an off-tackle rush was stopped for no gain, turning it over to Cincinnati to run out the clock for the win.
For the Eagles the loss spoiled several outstanding performances, including two rushing touchdowns by "true" freshman tailback Tim Conner (Cleveland, Ohio-Glenville) who gained 48 yards on 11 carries. Another "true" freshman, linebacker Daniel Holtzclaw (Enid, OK-Enid), led the defense with 15 tackles while newcomer Michael Richardson (Indianapolis, IN-Ben Davis-Harper J.C.) added 14, and senior Rontrell Woodruff (Southfield, Mich.-Lathrup) turned in 12.
Matt Bohnet completed 22-of-33 passes for 167 yards and one touchdown. Deslauriers hauled in a 27-yard touchdown pass from Bohnet, to give him 15 career touchdown passes, moving him into second on the all-time EMU list.
Wellock enjoyed an exceptional day on special teams, making field goals of 20 and 38 yards, punting five times for a 43.8 yard average, and booting two kickoffs for touchbacks and another to the goal line.
