Mitch McCartney is entering his second season at Eastern Michigan as an Assistant Athletic Media Relations Director in the 2024-25 athletics season.
A native of Saint Clair Shores, Mich., McCartney first joined the Eagles in a temporary role as a Media Relations Assistant tasked with covering Eastern’s baseball program. After the 2023 baseball season, McCartney remained on staff in a volunteer role in the summer of 2023, before earning a full-time position at EMU as an Assistant Athletic Media Relations Director in August 2023.
McCartney currently serves as the primary media contact and is responsible for all media relations related duties for Eastern baseball, both the men’s and women’s cross country/track and field programs, and the women’s swimming and diving program. Furthermore, he assists with football coverage as a secondary media contact.
Graduating from Oakland University with a Bachleor’s degree in Communications in December 2022, McCartney got his start in the industry as an intern with the Golden Grizzlies prior to his senior year at OU. After a stint as a summer intern, he was promoted to a paid student position and was named the interim contact for the men’s soccer team where he was responsible for all in-game media coverage, along with game previews, post-game recaps, and website management.
Also at Oakland, McCartney honed his broadcast skills as he served as a member of the OU ESPN+ broadcast team where he acted as a camera and graphics board operator for all Golden Grizzlies’ basketball games.
A 2017 graduate of Lakeview High School, McCartney gained in experience in a multitude of sports as a high school athlete, primarily in the realm of cross country/track & field and basketball as he aided the Huskies in winning three MAC Blue titles in track & field and two in cross country from his sophomore-senior year.
