Eastern Michigan University Head Volleyball Coach Kim Berrington announced the addition of Shayna Munson to her coaching staff Thursday, June 12. Munson was a member of Coach Berrington’s squad for a pair of seasons from 2001-02.

" I am so excited to have Shayna back as an assistant coach," exclaimed Berrington. "She has spent the past 10 years playing professionally and coaching.  Her vast experience will be an asset to all of our players. Her passion for the sport will pour out into the gym everyday. And, she will be a fabulous role model for our student athletes."

Munson returns to Ypsilanti with a storied beach playing career. The Temperance, Mich. native has been playing beach volleyball professionally since 2006 and has seen time on six different tours. She competed in the Qualifiers, Young Guns Tour and Main Draw in the Association of Volleyball Professionals, as well as the competing in the National Volleyball League. Munson was a three-time tournament champion at the Corona Wide Open and she has also won six separate national championships.

First in 2009, she won the Dig Beach Tour in Miami, Fla. in addition to her championship with East End Volleyball in Clearwater Beach, Fla. During 2010, Munson again came out on top of the East End and Dig the Beach, before taking home another East End championship and an Extreme Volleyball Professionals championship in 2011.

In addition to her professional career, she has coached at the high school level, most recently as an assistant varsity coach at Temperance Bedford High School. At Bedford, she helped the Lady Mules to the 2013 Michigan High School Athletic Association Final Four.

Prior to coaching at Bedford, Munson had a pair of positions in Florida. Most recently, she coached for three seasons at Palm Harbor University High School from 2009-12. Before Palm Harbor, she spent the 2008 season at Hudson High School, where she took the Cobras to the Florida state tournament’s final four and was named Coach of the Year.

On top of her high school coaching and professional beach career, Munson has coached a pair of club volleyball teams. From 1999-2003, she coached at Borderline Volleyball Club in Temperance. While living in the Sunshine State, she coached at the Pinellas Heat Volleyball Club in Clearwater, Fla.

Munson, who transferred to EMU from Kellogg Community College in Battle Creek, Mich. prior to the 2001 campaign, led the Eagles in total blocks with 100 in her first season donning the Green and White. In two seasons with EMU, Munson appeared in 63 matches and accumulated 644 kills, averaging 2.85 kills per frame. The Temperance Bedford graduate excelled from the service line averaging 0.24 aces per set, while she also posted 0.85 blocks per frame in her career. Following her playing career at EMU, she spent two seasons as a student assistant for Berrington.

Prior to joining the Eagles, Munson played a pair of seasons for Kellogg Community College. While competing for KCC, she was a two-time NJCAA All-American while also being named the Regional Player of the Year both seasons.

While at Temperance Bedford High School, Munson was a two-time all-state award winner in 1998 and 1999. In those same seasons, she was named the Monroe County High School Player of the Year. In 2010, Munson was inducted into the Bedford High School Athletic Hall of Fame as one of the school's Most Outstanding Athletes.
