Eastern Michigan University Head Rowing Coach Kemp Savage has announced the addition of Mike Bailey to his staff as an assistant coach for the 2014-15 season. Bailey brings a diverse background in coaching experience to the Eagles' rowing program.
"Mike is going to make a superb addition to our rowing staff," said Savage. "He brings a vast experience in rowing and his success with his novice athletes is going to be a big benefit in speed with the first year rowers pushing the varsity to get even better as athletes. Additionally, his background throughout the Midwest will really increase our ability to recruit in the local area."
"I am excited about getting my first NCAA Division I opportunity in women's rowing with Eastern Michigan," Bailey said. "I am looking forward to building a program with Coach Savage that will challenge for a spot at the NCAA Championships."
Bailey has spent the last two years as the head coach of the Purdue University women's crew team, following a three-year stint as the head coach for Michigan State University's men's crew. At MSU, he was named the 2010 American Collegiate Rowing Association's Men's Coach of the Year as he broke a 54-year team drought in putting five boats into the Dad Vail grand finals, including winning the novice men's lightweight 8.
In 2007 Bailey started a brand new NCAA Division III program at the Milwaukee School of Engineering (2007-09), where his teams placed both the novice heavyweight (4th) and lightweight (2nd) men's eights in the Dad Vail grand finals in their first year, and won the novice lightweight eight in his second year.
While coaching MSOE Bailey also led the Milwaukee Jr's program to their first ever finals appearances at high school nationals in the Men's 4, and a third place finish in the women's 8 at the prestigious Canadian Henley Regatta.
Prior to moving to Milwaukee, Bailey coached at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in his second stint as the assistant varsity men's coach (1993-94), and with the Mendota Rowing Club Jr.'s (1996-97) where his women's four qualified for the national championships.
From 1989-1993, Bailey was the program director at UC-Santa Barbara, where his men's team placed four boats in the grand finals at the 1990 IRA Championships, winning the open 4+, placing third in the 4-, and placing fourth in men's lightweight 8. His teams also won the 1991 men's Cal Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic, as well as four consecutive west coast championships in the men's lightweight 8.
Bailey was inducted into the UCSB Club Sports Hall of Fame in 2006 for the teams he coached during the 1990-1991 seasons.
In 1987 Bailey was hired for his first head coaching job as program director at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, Calif. Bailey took the team to it' first winning season in 16 years along with two grand finals appearances at the 1988 IRA Championships.
Prior to moving to Los Angeles, Bailey was the assistant varsity coach on the 1985-86 University of Wisconsin-Madison men's National Championship team, and a coxswain there from 1980-1985.
Bailey graduated with a bachelor's degree in Secondary Biology Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1986. He and his wife, Stella, have five children between them, and three grandchildren.
