Marty McGillan

Marty McGillan is entering his first season as Associate Head Coach at Eastern Michigan University in the 2026-27 season.
McGillan served as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Longwood University since 2018, helping lead the Lancers to two NCAA tournament appearances in the past five seasons, the first for Longwood since 2001.
Prior to his tenure at Longwood, McGillan was an assistant coach for the women’s basketball team at the University of Minnesota for the 2017-18 season. McGillan joined the Gophers after ten years at Winthrop University as an assistant men’s basketball coach.
McGillan followed Eastern Michigan men’s basketball head coach Billy Donlon to Wright State University, where they both served on the same bench as assistant coaches in the 2006-07 season. Both coaches helped lead the Raiders to their first Horizon League regular-season and tournament championships, and to an NCAA Tournament bid.
Before coming to Wright State, McGillan and Donlon coached at their alma mater, UNC Wilmington for four seasons. Both saw continued success at Wilmington, taking the Seahawks to two NCAA tournament appearances and two conference championships.
Early in his coaching career, McGillan coached extensively in the Southeastern United States, serving coaching stints at Charleston, Citadel, Coastal Carolina, and East Carolina University from 1991-2001.
McGillan graduated from UNC Wilmington in 1990 with a degree in Therapeutic Recreation.
