CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University track and field student-athletes Michael Hawkins and Gabe Oliveira were named Mid-American Conference (MAC) Men's Track Athlete of the Week and Men's Field Athlete of the Week, respectively, the conference office announced Tuesday, May 12.
Hawkins (Detroit, Mich./Cass Technical) earned the honor for the first time after winning the 400m hurdles at the Hillsdale Last Chance meet, hosted by Hillsdale College, May 6, with a season-best time of 52.95. His performance ranks second in the MAC and was the top 400m hurdles time in the conference this past week.
Oliveira (São Paulo, Brazil/Escola Estadual Jornalista David Nasser/Central Arizona) also earned the accolade for the first time as he won the triple jump at the Len Paddock Open, hosted by the University of Michigan, May 8, with a personal-best mark of 15.54m (51-00.00). Competing in his first triple jump event since winning the indoor MAC title, Oliveira's mark leads the MAC by more than a foot, ranks 26th in the NCAA East Region, and is seventh-best in EMU program history.
The awards mark Eastern's first time receiving multiple in the same week this outdoor season. In the indoor season, Kayenn Mabin (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central) and Jake McEachern (Lloydminster, Alberta/Lloydminster Comprehensive) swept the men's awards, Dec. 10.
