-- Regina Mendez Carreño captured a tough, straight-sets victory to claim the lone point as the Eastern Michigan University tennis team fell, 6-1, on the road at No. 55 University of North Florida, March 4, at the UNF Tennis Complex in Jacksonville, Fla. The Eagles (9-4) played their final non-conference match of the season when they faced the Ospreys (13-0) and will now look toward the start of Mid-American Conference play at home, March 13.

"I need to give a ton of credit to North Florida; they are a heck of a team," Head Coach Ryan Kucera said. "We played a strong doubles point, but they locked it down and were more aggressive than us in the big moments. It was the same in singles; a ton of competitive matches but they knew how to play the important points and were incredibly disciplined. Today was a good lesson for us moving forward. We weren't happy with the way we competed against Stetson and I'm really encouraged they committed to a different mentality today. UNF exposed details we must improve, but nobody laid down and we kept believing and looking for solutions. I am very proud of Regina (Mendez Carreño). She played like our captain and was definitely the tougher and more disciplined player. We are excited to return home and use these lessons to attack MAC play next week."

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Eagles battled throughout the doubles matches, but the Ospreys collected the point as they won the bouts at No. 1 and No. 3, both by 6-4 scores. Matilde Parreira (Leiria, Portugal/Escola Secundária Afonso Lopes) and Sabrina Tolstova (Odesa, Ukraine/Tennisquick Los Cristianos) held a 5-4 lead in their match at No. 2, but the bout was abandoned as the hosts had secured the doubles point.

The Ospreys captured the next five points for a 6-0 lead as they won at No. 4 and No. 2 before clinching the team victory with a win at No. 5. North Florida added wins at No. 1 and No. 3 before the final match went to the Eagles as Mendez Carreño (Los Cabos, Mexico/Picacho McGregor) won a two-set battle over Jasmin Makela, 7-5, 7-6(5), to give Eastern its lone point on the day.

NOTING THE TEAM
» With the loss, the Eagles finished their non-conference slate at 9-4 while the Ospreys, ranked No. 55 nationally, improved to 13-0.
» Eastern fell to 0-2 all-time against North Florida with both matches being played in Jacksonville. The Ospreys won the first meeting, 5-2, March 2, 2006.

Up Next
With its non-conference schedule complete, Eastern will turn its focus to its Mid-American Conference slate that will open the weekend of March 13-15 with two matches. The Eagles will open MAC play at home, March 13, with a 1 p.m. contest against Northern Illinois University, marking the final regular season meeting before NIU departs for the Horizon League next season. Two days later, the Eagles will venture to Amherst, Mass., for an 11 a.m. contest, March 15, against MAC newcomer University of Massachusetts.
