YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University baseball team won a historic, 15-inning thriller against rival Central Michigan University, 9-8, Friday, March 27, at Oestrike Stadium.

The 15-inning contest is Eastern's longest in the modern statistical era (1999-present).

Tommy Rose (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth) earned the win, the first of his career, as he tossed a career-long 4.0 innings with a career-high seven strikeouts while allowing just one hit. CMU's Gavin Moczydlowsky (1-2) was tagged with the loss. Eastern right-hander John Carmichael (Destrehan, La./Destrehan/McLennan C.C.) started on the mound, going 5.2 innings while allowing four earned runs off four hits. He struck out five batters while walking three.

The day saw Eastern strike out 19 CMU batters, the most in program history in the modern statistical era as Eastern knocked a season-high 21 hits, the sixth-most in program history.

How it Happened
The Eagles built an early lead, scoring a run in the first inning after an error allowed TJ Williams (Racine, Wis./Racine Horlick/Kansas) to cross the plate. In the third, senior Bruce Jellison (Hartland, Mich./Hartland/Wabash Valley) singled home Ty Stecko (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin/Mount St. Mary's) to make it a 2-0 game.

Central Michigan cut the deficit in half in the top of the fifth, but Eastern Michigan responded immediately. An RBI single from freshman Demir Heidelberg (Homewood, Ill./Homewood Flossmoor) and a sacrifice bunt RBI from junior Nick Weaver (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood/Elgin C.C.) pushed the Eagles' lead to 4-1.

The Chippewas battled back, scoring three runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game, 4-4. Eastern Michigan answered with its biggest inning of the day, exploding for four runs in the bottom of the frame. Jellison delivered a two-run single up the middle, and Weaver followed with a two-run double down the left-field line to give the Eagles a commanding 8-4 lead.

After two scoreless innings, Central Michigan mounted a stunning two-out rally in the top of the ninth, scoring four runs to tie the game at 8-8 and force extra innings. The EMU bullpen buckled down, holding the Chippewas scoreless for the next six frames. The marathon finally ended in the bottom of the 15th when senior Drew Jones (Cleveland, Ohio/Brush/Ohio State) scored on a walk-off sacrifice fly to right field by redshirt junior Leewood Molessa (Pullman, W. Va./Williamstown/UMBC).
