Senior tied for 12th in the inaugural GameAbove Golf Invitational to pace Eastern
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- Janae Leovao has been named the Mid-American Conference Golfer of the Week, the league office announced today, March 13, marking the third time this season the Eastern Michigan University senior has been recognized. Leovao is coming off a tie for 12th place at the inaugural GameAbove Golf Invitational at Rolling Hills Country Club in Rolling Hills Estates, Calif., earlier this week as she helped her team to another strong showing in a stacked field of competitors.
Leovao (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino/Long Beach State) led the Eagles in the event co-hosted by Eastern and the University of Southern California as she tied for 12th at 1-over 217 (77-70-70), climbing four spots in the final round for her fourth top 12 finish of the year. Leovao, then ranked No. 68 in the collegiate ranks and No. 204 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR), placed ahead of 11 players ranked higher on the world lists and seven on the collegiate charts while posting the 24th-lowest 54-hole score in program history. Her finish helped the No. 30 Eagles finish in a tie for fourth place with No. 22 University of Arizona and No. 26 Southern Methodist University while defeating No. 11 University of California Los Angeles for the second consecutive tournament. The only teams to finish ahead of EMU were three of the top four teams in the nation: No. 2 USC, No. 3 University of Oregon, and No. 4 Texas A&M University.
The weekly award is the third captured by Leovao this season after she was honored Sept. 19 before sharing the award with her twin sister, Jasmine Leovao (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino/Long Beach State), Oct. 24. She is the third different Eastern player to earn MAC Golfer of the Week three times in a single season (four total times it has happened) and the first since the 2012-13 season when Sarah Johnson earned three accolades (Nov. 1, 2012, March 7, 2013, and April 18, 2013). Stephany Fleet was the first member of the program to earn three weekly MAC awards in a single season and accomplished the feat in two different seasons, including the 2006-07 (Sept. 27, 2006, Oct. 4, 2006, and March 28, 2007) and 2008-09 (Sept. 18, 2008, Feb. 11, 2009, and April 1, 2009) seasons.
Additionally, the honor is the sixth attained by the Eagles this season. Along with her three awards, Jasmine Leovao has been honored twice (Oct. 24 and Feb. 20) while Baiyok Sukterm (Bang Yi, Thailand/Panitchayakan Rajdamnern Tech/Lindsey Wilson) was honored Oct. 10.
The Eagles return to competition March 20-22 when they travel south to Seminole Legacy Golf Club in Tallahassee, Fla., to compete in the Florida State Match Up, hosted by Florida State University.
