The Eagles are back in action at SIUE for a four-game series starting Friday, Feb. 27
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped a non-conference series finale, 6-1, to Austin Peay State University at Raymond C. Hand Park, Sunday, Feb. 22.
How it Happened
Austin Peay took control early, breaking a scoreless tie in the second inning with a run-scoring single. The Governors extended their lead in the third on a solo home run and an RBI single, pushing the score to 3-0. Eastern Michigan struggled to generate offense against the Austin Peay starter, who carried a no-hitter through five and two-thirds innings with six strikeouts. A two-run single in the fourth further stretched the deficit to 5-0.
The Eagles finally broke through in the seventh when Nathan Borchardt (Stanley, N.C./Lincoln/King) scored on a throwing error after reaching base for the third time via a walk. The only hit for Eastern Michigan came in the eighth from Ty Stecko (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin/Mount St. Mary's), who singled to end Austin Peay's combined no-hit bid.
Austin Peay added its final run in the seventh on a wild pitch, concluding the game in a 6-1 win.
Game Notes
» Ty Stecko recorded the lone hit for Eastern Michigan, his team-high eighth of the season. He reached safely off a hit for the third-consecutive game while reaching base for the seventh consecutive contest.
» Nathan Borchardt set a career high with three walks and accounted for three of the Eagles' four total baserunners, scoring the only run. His three walks are the most from an Eagle in a single game this season and stand second by value in the Mid-American Conference.
» On the mound, freshman Tommy Rose (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth) provided a highlight in relief, pitching a career-long three innings and recording a pair of strikeouts, the most in his NCAA tenure. Rose allowed just one earned run in his second career appearance.
» Aidan Norris (Platte City, Mo./Platte County/Iowa Western C.C.) and Cole Egan (Pittsburgh, Pa./West Allegheny/George Mason) each tossed scoreless relief outings. The appearance marked Egan's second of the season without allowing a run and Norris' first.
