Leovao Sisters Share MAC Golfer of the Week Honors

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- Janae Leovao and Jasmine Leovao, members of the Eastern Michigan University women's golf program, have been named the Mid-American Conference Women's Golfers of the Week, the conference office announced, Feb. 20. The twins tied for fourth place at the Alice & John Wallace Invitational in Palm Desert, Calif., Feb. 14-16, to help the Eagles to a second-place team finish while defeating a pair of top 15 teams.
The Leovaos (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino/Long Beach State) shot matching Even-par 213s to tie for fourth place at Monterey Country Club as the duo helped lead the No. 33 Eagles to a second-place finish in a field featuring 10 teams ranked in the national top 100 with three teams ranked in the top 11 nationally, two of whom the Eagles defeated. Sitting behind No. 2 University of Southern California in the team standings and placing ahead of No. 11 the University of California Los Angeles (third) and No. 10 Vanderbilt University (fifth), Jn. Leovao (No. 100 Scoreboard/No. 244 WAGR) and Js. Leovao (No. 92/No. 219) each finished ahead of 10 players ranked higher in the collegiate and/or international ranks, including No. 21/No. 130 Jeonghyun Lee (UCLA), No. 23/No. 51 Elise Lee (USC), No. 31/No. 13 Jasmine Koo (USC), No. 39/No. 90 Ava Merrill (Vanderbilt), No. 43/No. 91 Elizabeth Rudisill (Vanderbilt), No. 54/No. 100 Bailey Shoemaker (USC), No. 88/No. 91 Tillie Claggett (Vanderbilt), No. 112/No. 214 Leia Chung (Boise State University), No. 122/No. 136 Angelina Liu (UCLA), and No. 283/No. 114 Constance Fouillet (University of California). The 213 strokes shot by each tied for the ninth-best score in program history while leading the team to an 861, the second-lowest in program history. Each Eagle fired one round in the 60s with Jn. Leovao's 67 in round two ranking third all-time in program history while Js. Leovao's 68 in the final round stands as the eighth-lowest. All told, the fourth-place finishes marked the third top five showing of the year for Jn. Leovao and the fourth in five events for Js. Leovao.
The honors are the fourth and fifth attained by the Eagles this season with each player earning her second award. Jn. Leovao was selected for the award, Sept. 19, while Js. Leovao first earned the accolade Oct. 24. Additionally, Baiyok Sukterm (Bang Yi, Thailand/Panitchayakan Rajdamnern Tech/Lindsey Wilson) has been honored this year with the junior earning recognition Oct. 10.
The Eagles are back in action March 9-10 when they return to California to join USC as hosts of the inaugural GameAbove Invitational at Rolling Hills Country Club is Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.
