Turnbull Named MAC Golfer of the Week

Freshman turned in his best collegiate performance earlier in the week in Alabama
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- Robby Turnbull, a freshman on the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team, has been named the Mid-American Conference Men's Golfer of the Week, the conference office announced, Feb. 20. Turnbull is coming off is best performance as an Eagle as he tied for sixth at the Hal Williams Collegiate, Feb. 16-17, in Mobile, Ala.
Turnbull (Auckland, New Zealand/Selwyn College) posted his best collegiate finish and his first collegiate top 10 showing as he tied for sixth on the Crossings Course at the RTJ Magnolia Grove in Mobile, Ala., to help the No. 120 Eagles to a fourth-place finish that featured wins over five teams ranked ahead of them, including No. 53 Rice University, No. 57 University of South Alabama, No. 58 University of Memphis, No. 67 University of Nebraska, and No. 118 Texas State University. Turnbull led the charge as he was under par in all three rounds to shoot 7-under 203 (69-67-67), which tied for the fourth-lowest score in program history. His first tournament under par as a collegiate player, the freshman lowered his previous best by eight strokes (211, Jim DeLapa Collegiate) while he captured his first top 10 showing after posting a previous best of tied for 24th at the DeLapa event. Turnbull, ranked No. 805 heading into the tournament before rising 294 spots to No. 511 afterwards, finished ahead of numerous players ranked higher than him, including nine in the top 200 and three members of the top 60.
The weekly honor is the first of Turnbull's career and the fourth earned by a member of the team this season after Charlie Box (Leicester, England/Wreake Valley Academy/Hutchinson CC) earned the accolade three times during the fall season, including Oct. 3, Oct. 10, and Nov. 7. Combined, the Eagles have now secured 46 weekly awards from the MAC since the start of the 1999-00 season.
Turnbull and the Eagles are back in action March 17-18 when they travel to the Golf Club of Houston in Humble, Texas, to compete in the All-American Collegiate.
