MOBILE, Ala. (EMUEagles.com) – Robby Turnbull
posted his best finish as a collegiate golfer while two of his teammates placed in the top 20 to help the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team finish fourth at the Hal Williams Collegiate, Feb. 16-17, at RTJ Magnolia Grove in Mobile, Ala. The Eagles, playing on the par-70, 7,129-yard Crossings Course, finished ahead of five teams ranked higher, including four teams in the top 100.
 
Eastern finished at 13-under 827 (272-271-284) to place fourth while breaking several records, including its overall score ranking as the lowest in program history by five strokes. Additionally, the Eagles' first-round 272 tied the program record before they broke it one round later with their 271 strokes. Overall, No. 13 University of Illinois won the team title at 31-under 809 while No. 65 University of Southern Mississippi was second at 16-under 824 and University of Alabama Birmingham third at 14-under 826. The Eagles, ranked No. 122 this week, placed ahead of No. 58 University of Memphis (tied for fifth), No. 67 University of Nebraska (tied for fifth), No. 58 and host University of South Alabama (10th), and No. 53 Rice University (11th).
 
Individually, Turnbull (Auckland, New Zealand/Selwyn College) led the charge as he was under par in all three rounds to tie for sixth overall at 7-under 203 (69-67-67), which tied for the fourth-lowest score in program history. His first tournament under par as a collegiate player, the freshman lowered his previous best by eight strokes (211, Jim DeLapa Collegiate) while he captured his first top 10 showing after posting a previous best of tied for 24th at the DeLapa event. Turnbull, ranked No. 805 in the latest national computer rankings, finished ahead of numerous players ranked higher than him, including nine in the top 200 and three members of the top 60.
 
Turnbull was one of three Eagles in the top 20 with Joshua Hess (Schattdorf, Switzerland/Montverde Academy (Fla.)) finishing tied for 12th and Charlie Box (Leicester, England/Wreake Valley Academy/Hutchinson CC) finishing tied for 19th. Hess shot 4-under 206 (67-68-71) for the seventh-lowest score in EMU history as he lowered his collegiate best by one seven strokes after shooting 213 at the Whirlwind Collegiate Invitational to open the season. Box carded a 2-under 208 (67-69-72) to tie for the 17th-lowest score in EMU history while finishing the tournament under par for the fourth consecutive time this season and for the sixth time in seven events this year.
 
Tim Chan (Hong Kong, China/Loretto School/VCU) and Rory McDonald-O'Brien (Shrewsbury, England/Shrewsbury School/USC-Aiken) rounded out the five scoring players in the tournament as Chan shot 4-over 214 (69-71-74) while McDonald-O'Brien finished 6-over 216. Rupert Toomey (Melbourne, Australia/Brighton Grammar), a freshman making his collegiate debut after joining the team in January, tied for 76th overall at 14-over 224 (75-72-77).
 
Individual Notes
» Robby Turnbull put together his best round as a collegiate competitor as he shot 203 (69-67-67) to record the fourth-lowest score in program history. He lowered his collegiate-best score by eight strokes after shooting 211 at the Jim DeLapa Collegiate (Sept. 28-29) while recording his first top 10 collegiate finish as well.
» Robby Turnbull was the only Eagle to post three rounds under par in the event. It marked his first time this season accomplishing the feat after scoring under par in just one of his previous nine rounds.
» Joshua Hess finished at 206 (67-68-71) to tie for the seventh-lowest score in program history. He bettered his previous to-par score by one stroke after opening the year at 3-under in the Whirlwind Collegiate Invitational, Sept. 8-9, while also lowering his lowest collegiate score by seven strokes (213 at Whirlwind).
» Charlie Box added his fifth top 20 finish of the season and his fourth consecutive as he shot 208 in the event, tying for the 17th-lowest score in program history. With his rounds of 67 (first) and 69 (second), he has now recorded 10 rounds in the 60s this year and 32 in his career.
» Rupert Toomey made his debut for the Eagles, shooting 224 in his collegiate debut. He signed with the team in November 2025 and joined the roster in early January 2026.
» Entering the tournament, Charlie Box was the highest ranked Eagle at No. 222 in the Scoreboard rankings. Each of the five Eagles in the lineup finished ahead of at least one player ranked in the national top 200 this week, with Robby Turnbull defeating nine, Joshua Hess defeated eight, Box was ahead of six, and both Tim Chan and Rory McDonald-O'Brien finished ahead of one.
 
Team Notes
» The Eagles, who entered the tournament ranked No. 122 in the Feb. 11 Scoreboard/Clippd standings, finished ahead of five teams ranked higher, including No. 53 Rice (11th), No. 57 South Alabama (10th), No. 58 Memphis (tied for fifth), and No. 67 Nebraska (tied for fifth) and No. 118 Texas State (eighth). Additionally, Eastern finished ahead of MAC foe Kent State, who was 13th overall.
» Eastern shot a program-record 827 to place fourth in the Hal Williams event, which took five strokes off the previous record of 832 that was shot Sept. 9-10, 2019, at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational. It marked the first time EMU shot under 830 and the fifth time it has come in under 840 in a three-round tournament.
» The first two rounds of the tournament were record-setting for the Eagles as their first-round score of 272 tied the school record before their second-round 271 broke it. The previous best of 272 had stood since Sept. 9, 2019, when Eastern shot 272 in the second round of the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational.
» With their scores in the first two rounds, the Eagles carded a pair of scores under 275 in the same event for the first time in program history. Additionally, it marked only the second time Eastern has shot 277 or better in two rounds of the same event after doing so Feb. 25-26, 2017, at the Loyola Intercollegiate where the Eagles shot 275 in the first round and 277 in the second.
