MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The wait is over! After four weeks of non-conference match ups, the Eastern Michigan University football team is set to open Mid-American Conference play when it travels to Mount Pleasant, Mich. for a contest against Central Michigan University Saturday, Sept. 30. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. inside Kelly/Shorts Stadium. EMU (1-3, 0-0 MAC) is coming off a game that saw its offense march down the field with 44 seconds to play to kick a game-winning 42-yard field goal to upend The University of Louisiana, 34-31, last weekend in Ypsilanti. Meanwhile, CMU (2-2, 0-0 MAC) rolled up 506 yards in total offense and its defense forced two early turnovers as it manhandled Wagner, 49-10, in its home opener.

The game will be televised on ESPN+ where Doug Sherman and Marcus Ray will have the call. The game can be heard live on WEMU (89.1 FM), The Varsity Network app, and SiriusXM with Tom Helmer (play-by-play), Rob Rubick (analyst), and Elena Davis (sideline) on the radio call.

50TH GO AROUND FOR THE MAC
Eastern Michigan football begins its 50th season in the Mid-American Conference in 2025. The school joined the league in 1973 but did not start playing football in the league until 1976.

BATTLE FOR THE MICHIGAN MAC TROPHY
EMU's first game against an in-state rival also means the beginning of its quest for the "Michigan MAC Trophy." Given annually to one of the Michigan-based, Mid-American Conference institutions (EMU, WMU, CMU), the trophy is awarded to the team that has the best head-to-head record against the others. It is one of just two regularly-awarded trophies between three teams (the other is the Commander-in-Chief's trophy between Army, Navy, and Air Force). Originating in 2005, EMU has claimed ownership five times (2007, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2022).

OPENING THE MAC AWAY FROM HOME
When Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan meet, it will mark the fifth time the Eagles have opened their MAC schedule against the Chippewas. Eastern is 1-3 in those games, including a 26-23 loss on Sept. 30, 2023, with the lone win coming in 2005, a 23-20 overtime road decision. A victory this year would give EMU consecutive road wins in MAC openers for the first time, following last season's 52-33 win at Kent State. The Eagles have never started 1-0 in back-to-back seasons when opening league play on the road and have opened their conference schedule away from home in seven of the last eight years.

NO. 134 IN THE 734
Eastern Michigan is currently playing its 134th season of football with the program first playing in 1891. Tied with NC State and Iowa State for 29th on the all-time ledger in seasons played, the Eagles are third in the Mid-American Conference behind newcomer UMass (143rd season) and Miami (137th). Along with Miami, the only other team on this year's schedule that has played more is UK (135th).

THE EASTERN 500
Following the win over Louisiana (Sept. 20), EMU holds an all-time record of 496-633-47, leaving it four wins shy of 500. The Eagles are one of four teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) that could reach 500 wins this season, including Temple (499), Rice (499), and Wake Forest (498).

WINNERS IN SEPTEMBER
Since the 2016 season, Head Coach Chris Creighton has led Eastern to a 16-15 record in the month of September. From 2013-15, EMU posted a cumulative September record of 0-9.

KNOW THE FOE: CENTRAL MICHIGAN
The Chippewas enter the game with a 2-2 record and are coming off a 49-10 home win over Wagner, a win that snapped a two-game slide that saw CMU fall at Pittsburgh (45-17) and at Michigan (63-3). Offensively, Joe Labas leads the way with 422 yards on 32-of-46 passing with four touchdowns and one interception while Trey Cornist has carried the ball 43 times for 181 yards and one score. Defensively, Jordan Kwiatkwoski has tallied 24 tackles and one interception.

ALL-TIME VERSUS THE CHIPPEWAS
This week marks the 103rd meeting between Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan, a rivalry that began on Nov. 1, 1902, with a 10-0 Chippewa win in Mount Pleasant. CMU leads the all-time series, 64-32-6, and holds a 38-11-2 advantage in games played in mid-Michigan. The teams have alternated victories over the last four seasons. Eastern won 38-34 at home on Homecoming last year, while CMU earned a 26-23 win in Mount Pleasant in 2023. EMU's most recent win before that came in 2022 with a 38-19 decision in Ypsilanti. EMU has not earned back-to-back wins in the series since 2007 and 2008, when they followed a 48-45 road win with a 56-52 home triumph.

HISTORY LESSON
The football rivalry between EMU and Central Michigan is the longest-running rivalry between any two schools in the Mid-American Conference. It is also the second-longest running series within the state of Michigan, trailing only the Michigan-Michigan State series, which has been played 117 times. Furthermore, it is tied for the 85th most-played game at any level of college football.

LAST MEETING WITH CENTRAL MICHIGAN
Cole Snyder accounted for four touchdowns, including a game-winning sneak in the final minute, to lead Eastern Michigan to a 38-34 comeback win over Central Michigan, Oct. 19, 2024. The Eagles (5-2, 2-1 MAC) trailed 34-16 early in the fourth quarter before scoring 22 straight points. Snyder connected with Terry Lockett Jr. for touchdown passes of 49 and 30 yards to cut the deficit to three. After getting the ball back with 1:42 left at their own 38, EMU drove inside the 1-yard line. On fourth down, Snyder powered across for the decisive score. Central's last drive ended on downs at the EMU 45. Snyder finished 17 of 38 for 300 yards with one interception. Markus Allen had 140 receiving yards and a touchdown, while Lockett added 100 yards and two scores. Delbert Mims III ran for 90 yards on 21 carries, including a 38-yard burst on the winning drive. Marion Lukes led CMU (3-4, 1-2) with 118 rushing yards on 13 carries. The Chippewas built their 18-point lead with two defensive scores, a 67-yard fumble return by Jason Williams and a 7-yard recovery by Gavin Harris.

LAST TIME IN MT. PLEASANT
Marion Lukes scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 24-yard run in the fourth quarter, and Central Michigan held off Eastern Michigan, 26-23, Sept. 30, 2023. Eastern had a chance to tie late, driving 14 plays into field-goal range, but Jesus Gomez missed a 46-yarder with 51 seconds left. Earlier, Gomez had an extra-point attempt blocked and returned by Dakota Cochran for two points, tying the game at 16. Jase Bauer led CMU (3-2) with 218 passing yards, one touchdown, and one interception on 19-of-26 passing. He also added a rushing score, while Myles Bailey ran for 92 yards. The Chippewas avenged last season's 38-19 loss to EMU. Austin Smith paced the Eagles (2-3) with 186 passing yards and a touchdown, plus 91 rushing yards and another score. Tanner Knue had seven catches for 68 yards and a touchdown.

EMU'S LAST WIN IN MOUNT PLEASANT
A dramatic 30-yard touchdown run by quarterback Alex Gillett with just 37 seconds left in the game broke a 28-28 tie to give Eastern Michigan a 35-28 win over Central Michigan inside Kelly/Shorts Stadium, Oct. 15, 2011.

Then-Head Coach Ron English's Eagles held what looked like a safe 28-13 lead with 5:39 left in the game, but Central came back to score 15 unanswered points to tie the game at 28-all with 1:09 left. Facing what looked like a certain overtime finish, the Eagles then took the ensuing kickoff and marched all the way to the CMU 30-yard line setting up the exciting run by Gillett. Kody Fulkerson added the PAT kick for the 35-28 EMU lead with 37 seconds left.

Central would not go quietly, however, advancing all the way to the EMU 28-yard line before cornerback Marcell Rose picked off a Ryan Radcliff pass on the last play of the game at the EMU four-yard-line and returned it to the eight before sliding down to end the contest.

HISTORIC OUTINGS
Ahead of the 2025 season, the Eagles have numerous entries into the NCAA FBS Record Book with three coming in games played against Central Michigan. Individually, the Nov. 28, 2008, game in Ypsilanti saw the Eagles set the standard for pass completions (Andy Schmitt, 58) and receptions (Tyler Jones, 23), while the 58 completions also stand as the most by a team.
As a team, the series went into overtime for three consecutive years, marking the longest streak in any series in the FBS. The streak opened Nov. 6, 2004, with a 61-58 (4OT) win for the Eagles at Ford Field before EMU took a 23-20 (OT) win at CMU, Sept. 24, 2005. The third consecutive game ended with a 24-17 (OT) win for CMU in Ypsilanti, Sept. 23, 2006.

PROTECT THE BALL
Ball security has been a strength for Eastern through four games. The Eagles have committed only two turnovers, matching the 2024 team for the fewest at this point in a season. They are tied for 16th nationally in turnovers lost, with only five FBS teams still turnover-free. Eastern is also one of 30 teams that has yet to lose a fumble in 2025.

CONTINUING A TREND
Over the past five years, Eastern has developed a pattern of winning its Homecoming game immediately after a loss. The trend began in 2021, when the Eagles fell 27-20 at Northern Illinois before edging Miami 13-12 at home. In 2022, they dropped a 50-31 game to Buffalo, then defeated UMass 20-13. The following year, Eastern lost 26-23 at Central Michigan, then bounced back with a 24-10 victory over Ball State. In 2024, a 38-14 setback to Miami was followed by a 38-34 win against Central Michigan. This season, the Eagles lost 48-23 at Kentucky before defeating Louisiana 34-31.

GOING GREEN IN THE RED ZONE
Eastern is one of 19 FBS teams with a perfect red-zone record this season, scoring on all 14 trips in 2025. The Eagles rank sixth among that group in red-zone appearances, producing nine touchdowns, six on the ground and three through the air, along with five field goals. They lead the MAC in red-zone efficiency, with Ohio next at 13-of-15.

NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS UNDER CREIGHTON
Since the start of the 1976 season, Eastern Michigan has won 56 games in non-conference play with 44.6percent of those victories (25 wins) coming in the past 12 seasons under Chris Creighton, an average of two non-conference wins per season.

In that same span, 14 of those wins have come on the road with a Creighton-led squad capturing nine wins (64.3 percent), including wins at Big Ten Conference opponents Rutgers (16-13, Sept. 9, 2017), Purdue (20-19, Sept. 8, 2018), and Illinois (34-31, Sept. 14, 2019), while adding a 30-21 win at Arizona State (Sept. 17, 2022), a then-member of the Pac-12 (currently Big 12).

Since 2016, Eastern has posted 55 wins, which ranks as the sixth-most victories of any team in the MAC.

McMillan entered the game needing just 11 yards to break the mark and flew past the mark with a 21-yard burst in the first quarter against Louisiana (Sept. 20). For his career, he tallied 1,651 yards on the ground for Weber State (2020-22) before transferring to EMU where he has tallied 464 yards.

THE CENTURY MARK
Dontae McMillan's 126 yards rushing marked the 229th time in program history an Eastern player broke the century mark in a single game. It also was the first in just under one year as Delbert Mimms III was the last Eagle to reach rush for 100+ yards when he accumulated 145 at Kent State, Sept. 28, 2024.

MORE FROM McMILLAN
Through the game with Louisiana (Sept. 20), Dontae McMillan has carried the ball 49 times for 345 yards and one score while adding nine receptions for 101 yards and one touchdown to give him 446 total yards with two scores. On the ground, McMillan is averaging 7.04 yards per carry, which leads the MAC and sits 19th nationally, while his 345 rushing yards and 86.3 yards per game averaging both ranking him second in the conference and among the top 35 in the FBS.

DUNLAP DOUBLES UP
Entering the game with Louisiana (Sept. 20), Tavierre Dunlap had recorded two career touchdowns with one each for Eastern Michigan and Michigan. Against the Ragin' Cajuns, he doubled that total as he ran for scores of two and six-yards to mark the first time in his career he has scored multiple touchdowns. Dunlap finished the day with 68 total yards as he ran the ball 11 times for 45 yards and added 23 yards on three receptions.

LEADER OF THE MAC
Through four games, Noah Kim finds himself among the MAC leaders for quarterbacks as he has accumulated 993 yards on 87-of-136 passing, the highest in the league. Ranked first with 87 completions, Kim's 248.3 yards per game average is 30.8 yards per game better than the next quarterback while he also ranks tied for third with just two interceptions thrown. Overall, Kim is averaging 21.8 completions per game, which leads the MAC and stands 22nd in the FBS.

STACKING STATS
Noah Kim has accumulated 993 yards passing in four games, giving him an average of 248.3 yards per contest. Ahead of this season, his highest production came in 2023 as a member of the Michigan State program where he tallied 1,090 yards in five games (218.0/game). As it stands, Kim is just 97 yards away from equaling his most productive passing season and seven yards from breaking 1,000 in a single season for the second time in his career.

THROUGH THE AIR
Noah Kim has thrown for at least one touchdown in each of his first four games with the Eagles, which is his the longest single-season stretch of his career after tallied three-games streaks for the Spartans in 2022 games against Akron (Sept. 10), Minnesota (Sept. 24), and Ohio State (Oct. 8). When combining seasons, his career-best streak is five games as he added two scores against Central Michigan (Sept. 1) and three against Richmond (Sept. 9) in the first two games of the 2023 campaign.

ONE IF BY LAND...
While Noah Kim has shown off his arm strength, he also featured his legs recently. Entering the game at Kentucky (Sept. 13), Kim had never tallied a rushing touchdown. He tallied his first ground score on a five-yard scamper late in the fourth quarter against the Wildcats and then added his second on EMU's first score of the Sept. 20 game with Louisiana, marking back-to-back rushing scores for the signal caller and the team.

KESSINGER KICKING IT
Rudy Kessinger tallied 10 points in the win over Louisiana (Sept. 20) as he was 4-for-4 in PATs and 2-for-3 in field goal attempts, including his 42-yard, game-winning boot with three seconds to play. For his efforts, he was selected the MAC's Special Teams Player of the Week, Sept. 22. After scoring double-digit points in back-to-back games for the first time in his career (11 at Kentucky), Kessinger is averaging 8.8 points per game, which ranks second in the MAC among kickers and third overall. Overall, Kessinger is 8-of-10 in field goals in 2025 and a perfect 11-of-11 on extra point attempts.

KICKING CAREER
Mitchell Tomasek, through the game with Louisiana, has accumulated 7,900 career punting yards, placing him sixth on the program's career ledger. Tomasek is now 100 yards away from becoming the sixth player in EMU history to reach 8,000 yards and 163 away from Jay Kurtz (2010-12) for fifth after Kurtz tallied 8,063 yards. For the season, Tomasek is averaging 49.8 yards per punt, which ranks first in the MAC and third in the FBS.

PULLING OUT THE DRIVER
Mitchell Tomasek has hit 53 of his 179 career punts for 50+ yards (29.6 percent), including 13 over 60 yards, while recording just 15 touchbacks. For his career, Tomasek has recorded a best of 72 yards at Jacksonville State (Sept. 23, 2023) while hitting a 70-yarder at home against Ball State (Oct. 7, 2023). He has recorded at least three punts of 62 yards or better in all three seasons he has played for the Eagles and is one away already from making four consecutive years after recording punts of 63 and 62-yards at Texas State.

BREAKING THE SEAL
After having not forced a turnover in its first three games of the season, the defense finally got on the board in 2025 with a pair of interceptions of Louisiana passes in the fourth quarter to keep the Eagles in the lead. Caleb Dobbs recorded his first career pick early in the fourth to halt a UL drive before Bryce Llewellyn joined the party with his first career interception with 3:36 remaining in the game.

LLEWELLYN SNAGS PLAYER OF WEEK HONORS
Bryce Llewellyn was selected the MAC's Defensive Player of the Week, Sept. 22, as he was instrumental in the win over Louisiana, Sept. 20. He posted a team-leading and career-high 10 tackles while recording his first career interception with 3:38 remaining in regulation and EMU holding a 31-24 lead. Tied for fourth in the MAC in interceptions and tied for ninth with 29 total tackles, Llewellyn's previous single-game high for tackles came Oct. 21, 2023, with Charleston Southern when he recorded eight stops at No. 17 UT Martin.

FLYING THE FLAG
When a MAC team defeats a member of a "Power Four" conference, they celebrate by hoisting a black flag with the MAC logo placed above crossbones, something the Eagles have done four times since 2017 with victories over Rutgers, Purdue, Illinois, and Arizona State. Dating back to the start of the 2006 season, at least one member of the MAC has flown the flag with the conference accumulating 48 wins in that stretch of 19 consecutive seasons, including 32 against the Big Ten. All told, the MAC has posted wins against foes from the Big Ten (32), SEC (2), Big 12 (6), the former Pac-12 (2), the ACC (4), and one over Notre Dame.

Overall, in the Eagles' four wins tie for the sixth-highest total in the MAC with Ball State and Western Michigan while Northern Illinois leads the way with nine, both Bowling Green and Central Michigan have six, and Ohio and Toledo have five. In 2025, the streak continued as Ohio handed visiting West Virginia (Big 12) a 17-10 decision in Athens, Sept. 6.

BACK ON THE LANES?
The Eagles will look to return to the postseason in 2025 and claim their seventh appearance under Chris Creighton. For the 2025 season, the MAC has affiliations with four games: the former Bahamas Bowl (vs. Conference USA), the Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl (vs. Mountain West), the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl (vs. MWC), and the GameAbove Sports Bowl (vs. Big Ten). Additionally, the MAC could send teams to two of the following: 68 Ventures Bowl (vs. Sun Belt), Boca Raton Bowl (vs. Group of Five), Camellia Bowl (vs. ACC/Sun Belt), Cure Bowl (vs. Group of Five), Frisco Bowl (vs. Group of Five), Myrtle Beach Bowl (vs. ACC/SBC), and New Mexico Bowl (vs. CUSA).

CREIGHTON CLIMBING
Head Coach Chris Creighton is entering his 12th year at the helm of the Eastern program and has accumulated 58 wins with the Eagles, the second-most in program history behind the 114 secured under Elton J. Rynearson, for whom the Eagles' home venue is named, sported 197 career wins, leaving him three away from 200. The third-longest tenured coach in program history behind Rynearson (26 years) and Fred Trosko (13) and one of just four men to lead the program for 10+ seasons, Creighton currently ranks fifth among active FBS coaches in career victories, trailing only Brian Kelly at LSU (296), K.C. Keeler at Sam Houston (273), Kirk Ferentz at Iowa (219), and Willie Fritz at Houston (214).

THEY HAVE THE TOUCH
Over the past 11 seasons (2014-24), the Eagles' 26 blocked kicks have them tied for third-most among all teams in the MAC as Eastern, Miami, and Toledo are one off the pace set by both Central Michigan and Northern Illinois, who each have 27. Over that span, Eastern has tallied at least one block in nine consecutive years (20 blocks) with Akron next with six consecutive years (8). EMU is one of three schools (CMU and Toledo) that has recorded at least one block in 10-of-11 seasons during the current span.

NO KICKING ZONE
Since taking over the program in 2014, Chris Creighton's teams have blocked 26 kicks, including at least one in each of the past nine consecutive years. In 2024, the Eagles blocked four kicks, the second-highest total for the team under Creighton behind only the six blocks tallied in 2014. Last year, Eastern blocked one punt and one point-after try at Washington (Sept. 7), blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown at home against St. Francis (Sept. 21), and blocked a 31-yard field goal attempt at Ohio (Nov. 13). The four blocks tied for the MAC lead with Northern Illinois while ranking sixth among all NCAA FBS teams.

Overall, in the 11 seasons under Creighton, EMU has blocked 10 field goal attempts, 10 punts with five being returned for touchdowns, and six extra-point attempts with one returned for a two-point defensive score.
