Box Ties for Ninth at Highlands Invitational to Lead EMU

WESTCHESTER, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – Charlie Box earned his first top 10 finish as a member of the Eastern Michigan University men's golf program to help the Eagles place fifth overall at the 2025 Highlands Invitational hosted by Turtleson at Chicago Highlands Golf Course in Westchester, Ill., Monday-Tuesday, Sept. 15-16. Playing on the par-72, 7,349-yard course, the Eagles placed ahead of eight squads in the tournament.
The Eagles finished 9-over 873 (291-294-288) to place fifth with Wake Forest University winning the team title at 24-under 840 (275-284-281) with host East Tennessee State University taking runner-up honors eight strokes behind at 16-under 848 (275-288-285). Coastal Carolina University (284-293-288=865) and the University of Louisiana (287-297-286=870) were the other two teams in the top five as they shot 1-over and 6-over, respectively.
Box (Leicester, England/Wreake Valley Academy/Hutchinson CC), who played his previous two seasons at Hutchinson Community College, a member of the NJCAA, posted his best finish in an NCAA Division I tournament as he shot 4-under 212 (69-70-73) to tie for ninth place, up 24 places from his debut one week earlier. The tie for ninth marked his 18th career finish among the top 10. Additionally, he posted a pair of rounds at or under par for the second week in a row with his opening round 69 standing as the 10th tournament he has played the first round in the 60s.
Joshua Hess (Schattdorf, Switzerland/Montverde Academy (Fla.)) captured his first career top 20 showing as the freshman shot 2-over 218 (77-70-71) to tie for 19th while Tim Chan (Hong Kong, China/Loretto School/VCU) was 4-over 220 (68-81-71) to tie for 23rd. Carlos Fernández Mortera (Gijon, Spain/Colegio La Corolla/Charleston (WV)) improved upon his finish from his debut one week ago as he shot 11-over 227 (78-76-73) to tie for 48th, up from the tie for 64th place he recorded at the Whirlwind Collegiate Invitational. Rory McDonald-O'Brien (Shrewsbury, England/Shrewsbury School/USC-Aiken) rounded out the Eagles in the field as he tied for 64th at 17-over 233 (77-78-78).
Individual Notes
» Charlie Box posted the 18th top 10 finish of his collegiate career and his first in an NCAA Division I tournament. He posted 17 while playing for Hutchinson CC the past two seasons before coming to Ypsilanti.
» Charlie Box opened the tournament shooting 69 to mark the 10th time in his career he carded a score of 69 or lower in the opening round.
» Joshua Hess, in his second collegiate event, posted his first career top 20 showing after tying for 19th. He tied for 33rd at the Whirlwind Collegiate Invitational one week earlier in his collegiate debut.
