Fernández Mortera Set to Join EMU Men’s Golf Program

Rising junior has twice competed at the NCAA Division II Championships

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Andy Walker, head coach of the Eastern Michigan University men's golf program, announced today, July 7, the addition of transfer Carlos Fernández Mortera to the 2025-26 roster with the junior holding two years of eligibility after playing at the NCAA Division II ranks. A standout for the University of Charleston (West Virginia), the Spaniard has competed in the NCAA Division II Championships twice while helping his team to a pair of conference titles.
 
"We are very excited to add Carlos (Charly) to our roster for this Fall," Walker said of his newest addition. "He's a great athlete who's proven he can win in college and will add depth to our lineup.  Charly has a team-first mentality and has shown his leadership qualities in the classroom, on the golf course, and in the weight room. I can't wait to coach him the next couple of years."
 
Fernández Mortera (Gijon, Spain/Colegio La Corolla/University of Charleston) recently finished his second collegiate season with the Golden Eagles where he placed 17th at the NCAA Division II Championships after placing seventh at the NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Regional. He also placed 45th at the 2024 NCAA event as a freshman after placing seventh in the regional competition. For his efforts, he was named to the PING NCAA Division II Atlantic All-Region team.
 
On a conference level, Fernández Mortera was solid in the Mountain East Conference he helped the Golden Eagles to a pair of MEC Championship crowns as he placed 15th individually as a freshman and took runner-up honors last year. An All-MEC honoree, he collected 11 finishes in the top 10 in his two seasons, including seven in 2024-25 that saw him win the Dr. Wally Edgell Invitational (Sept. 16-17, 2024) before placing second in his next two competitions. Recently, he returned to his native Spain and competed in a pair of events. After placing 15th at the Campeonato de Espana Amateur Absoluto Masculino, he returned to the course and won the Campeonato Excmop Ayuntamiento de Llanes by shooing 5-under 211 (70-70-71) for medalist honors.
 
Fernández Mortera is the fourth signee for Walker as the Spaniard is set to join two transfers in Charlie Box (Leicester, England/Wreake Valley Academy/Hutchinson CC) and Leandro Mihaich (Bell Ville, Argentina/Escuela Normal Superior Figueroa Alcorta/Oklahoma Christian) along with two freshmen in Joshua Hess (Schattdorf, Switzerland/Montverde Academy) and Robby Turnbull (Auckland, New Zealand/Sewlyn College).
