Blackwell Named MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Mackenzie Blackwell, a member of the Eastern Michigan University lacrosse team, earned her second weekly award from the league as she was named the Mid-American Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the MAC announced April 9. One day earlier (April 8), Blackwell was recognized as the MAC Offensive Player of the Week following another strong showing on the field.
Blackwell (North Beach, Md./Northern) turned in a pair of hat tricks as she scored three at No. 16 Michigan before scoring a season-high-tying five in the big win over the Titans, finishing the week with eight goals on 14 shots with 11 shots on goal. Blackwell, who recorded her second hat trick of the season against a nationally-ranked foe (three goals at No. 11 University of Notre Dame, Feb. 15), has tallied 10 hat tricks this season, which ties her own school record, while bringing her season goal total to 42, leaving her seven shy of tying her own EMU record (49) set last year. All told, Blackwell, who has 27 career hat tricks, scored one free-position goal with the rest coming during the run of play. Blackwell leads the MAC in total goals (42) and goals per game average (3.5).
The academic award is not only the first earned by Blackwell, it also is the first earned by any member of the team since the program began playing in 2023. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed one full year at an institution (first-year and transfers are not eligible), maintain at least a 3.0 grade-point average, and showed athletic achievement in the previous week. Blackwell is third EMU student-athlete to be recognized this year and the second female honoree after women's basketball player Olivia Westphal garnered the award Nov. 13.

Two games are on the schedule for the Eagles this week with one each at home and on the road. The weekend opens with a visit from the University of Oregon for a 3 p.m. game on ESPN+ Friday, April 11, at Scicluna Field. Two days later, the Eagles will travel to Kent, Ohio, to face Kent State University in a 1 p.m. game Sunday, April 13.
