Eastern played its fifth consecutive one-point match in MAC competitions
TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team suffered a 4-3 loss in a nail-biting Mid-American Conference match at the University of Toledo Friday, April 4, at Twos Athletic Club in Toledo, Ohio. The Eagles (9-10, 2-4 MAC) battled back from down 3-2 in the team scoring, but a tie-breaker win in the third set of the final singles match went the way of the Rockets (10-6, 3-3 MAC).
"[That was] a tough loss to a very strong team," Head Coach Ryan Kucera said. "We set a goal for the doubles point and I'm proud of the team for committing and executing. From there, it was a battle and it's disappointing to keep coming out on the wrong end of these with the level we're playing at. I'm really proud of Kseniia (Saenko) for fighting to the end and I wish she could have been rewarded for leaving it all out there for the team. We have a great chance to regroup on Sunday at Buffalo and I look forward to our response."
The Eagles took an early 1-0 lead in the team scoring as they won 2-of-3 doubles matches for the opening point. All three matches ended in 6-4 scores with the Rockets taking the first match at No. 2 before the Eagles won at both No. 1 and No. 3. The team of Daniella Shved (Holon, Israel/Ort Holon) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland/Sopocka (Sopot) Tennis Academy/Wayne State) won their match at No. 3 before Sabina Brichackova (Cheb, Czechia/Gymnázium Jana Blahoslava) and Prerna Vichare (Mumbai, India/Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics) won their 41st match together with their victory at No. 1 to clinch the doubles point.
In singles action, the hosts tied things up at 1-1 with a win at No. 2 before Brichackova captured a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 4 to push Eastern back in front, 2-1. The Rockets, however, would post wins at No. 6 and No. 3 to grab a 3-2 lead with two matches to play. Shved, playing at No. 1, came back from one set down to win in three sets, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3, and tie the team score at 3-3. In the final match, Kseniia Saenko (Voronezh, Russia/Gymnasium 2) also battled hard after dropping the first set, but fell in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(3).
