Cabello, Lewis, and Westphal each garnered honor for the 2024-25 season
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- The Mid-American Conference announced its annual academic awards with three members of the Eastern Michigan University women's basketball program earning Academic All-MAC honors the league announced, April 18. Elena Cabello, Kyndal Lewis, and Olivia Westphal each were honored with Lewis earning her third career accolade while both Cabello and Westphal were tabbed for the first time to give the program 42 total academic awards from the MAC.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. Student-athletes in their first year at an institution, such as freshmen and transfers, are not eligible for the award.
For the third consecutive year, Lewis (Belton, Mo./Belton) earned academic recognition from the MAC after being previously honored following the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons. In her senior campaign, Lewis overcame an injury to appear in 23 games with two starts for the Eagles while averaging 3.6 points, 2.8 rebounds, 0.6 assists, and 0.3 steals in 12.5 minutes. She scored a career-high 15 points against Central Michigan (Feb. 19) after finishing 7-of-9 from the floor, two games removed from posting a career-best 10 rebounds at Georgia State (Feb. 8).
Cabello (Malaga, Spain/IES Mediterraneo), who was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team, appeared in all 29 games in 2024-25 and was in the starting lineup 20 times. The Spaniard averaged 3.5 points, 2.7 rebounds, 0.6 assists, 0.5 steals, and 0.2 blocks per game while averaging nearly 1.0 offensive rebounds per game as well. Cabello averaged 17.4 minutes per game and was fourth on the team in shooting as she drained 41.2 percent of her shots while scoring 101 points on the season, an improvement of 63 points from her first year with the team.
Westphal (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park/Duquesne), who also was named a CSC Academic All-District honoree, started all 28 games she played (missed one game because of injury) this season and was the team's top three-point threat as she drained 60 triples one year removed from hitting 26. The graduate student and soon-to-be two-time graduate of EMU averaged 30.6 minutes per game and scored 8.2 points per game, a clip that included 2.1 three-pointers per contest, which ranked among the top 10 in the Mid-American Conference. Westphal, whose deep shooting led the team to 217 three-pointers on the year, the fourth-most in a single season in program history, made two or more three-point baskets in 18-of-28 games played while connecting on three or more in nine contests after doing so just five times previously in her career.
