Savannah de Bock ties for sixth individually as Eagles break more records

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team, playing in its second tournament this week, finished in sixth place at the Gators Invitational in Gainesville, Fla., with the Eagles shooting 31-over 871 (289-292-290) to finish ahead of three teams ranked in the national top 100 on the par-72, 6,002-yard Mark Bostick Golf Course at the University of Florida. The Eagles lowered the 54-hole school record for the second time this season as the 871 bettered the 879 carded at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational (Oct. 21-23) in Hawaii.

As at team, the Eagles, ranked No. 136 in the national top 100, finished ahead of seven teams ranked ahead of them, most notably No. 58 University of Michigan, their Washtenaw County neighbors. EMU also finished head of No. 81 Mercer University and No. 90 University of North Carolina Charlotte.

Savannah de Bock (Ecaussinnes-d'enghien, Belgium/Institut de l'Enfant-Jésus-Lycée/Georgia) was the top individual finisher for the Eagles as she carded a 1-under 209 (69-71-69) to tie for sixth place, her sixth top 10 finish of the season. De Bock's 209 ranks as the second-lowest in program history behind her 204 at the Golfweek Red Sky Classic (Sept. 23-25). She finished three strokes off the leader, Jessica Guiser (Florida), who shot 4-under 206 (68-69-69) to win on her home course.

Mariana Vega (Barranquilla, Columbia/Colegio Karl C. Parrish) finished tied for 21st as she shot 7-over 217 (73-71-73). Vega's 217 tied for the 14th-lowest score in program history and comes in two shots under her previous collegiate best score of 219 she carded in back-to-back events, including Rainbow Wahine Invitational and the Hurricane Invitational (Oct. 28-29). Additionally, in the first round, Vega stepped on the 177-yard sixth hole and sent the ball just short of the pin before it rolled in for a hole-in-one, the first by an Eagle this year.

Riley Kim (Aldie, Va./Lightridge), the reigning Mid-American Conference Golfer of the Week (March 7), tied for 31st at 11-over 221 (72-73-76). Entering the week, her collegiate best was 222, which she bettered in both tournaments, including her 218 at the River Landing Classic (March 3-4) and the 221 carded in Florida.

Two other Eagles competed in the tournament, including Erina Tan (Belmont, Western Australia/Mount Lawley Senior) and Angelica Holman (Fort Pierce, Fla./Lincoln Park Academy/Daytona State/Georgia). Tan tied for 52nd with a 17-over 227 (75-77-75) while Holman tied for 61st at 19-over 229 (79-77-73).

Player Notes
» Savannah de Bock got back to her low-scoring ways as her 1-under 209 (69-71-69) ranks as the second-best score in program history behind the 204 she shot at the Golfweek Red Sky Classic (Sept. 23-25) this fall. With her score, she now holds the program's No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 (tie), No. 6, and No. 8 (tie) scores.
» Savannah de Bock carded two rounds of 69 in Florida, marking the second and third time she has done that this season, tying for the 13th-lowest rounds in program history. She used those low rounds to not only help her to her sixth top 10 finish of the season but also place ahead of No. 25 Caitlyn Macnab (Ole Miss), the highest ranked player in the field, after the Rebel tied for 13th.
» Mariana Vega tied for 21st at 7-over 217 (73-71-73) to tie for the 14th-lowest 54-hole score in program history. Additionally, she lowered her best 54-hole score by two strokes after shooting 219 at both the Rainbow Wahine Invitational (Oct. 21-23) and the Hurricane Invitational (Oct. 28-29) earlier this year.
» Riley Kim, who was named the MAC Golfer of the Week Thursday, shot 221(72-73-76) to post the second-lowest 54-hole score of her career, four days removed from posting her college best. Riley carded a 218 at the River Landing Classic in Wallace, N.C., in a tournament that was played Monday-Tuesday, March 3-4.

Team Notes
» The Eagles entered the tournament ranked No. 136 in the Scoreboard/Clippd rankings with only one team in the field (No. 168 Florida Atlantic) ranked behind EMU. In the final standings, the Eagles finished ahead of seven teams ranked higher, including three in the top 100 in No. 58 Michigan (eighth), No. 81 Mercer (12th), and No. 90 Charlotte (seventh).
» The 871 total strokes are a school record, bettering the 879 (300-290-289) recorded at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational (Oct. 21-23) earlier this season. Additionally, the 871 marks only the second time EMU has shot 879 or better as the previous school record was 880 (301-293-286) at the 2015 Cardinal Classic.
» Eastern posted three rounds that rank highly in program history with their first-round 289 tying for the fourth-lowest while the third-round 290 and second-round 292 rank tied for sixth and tied for 14th, respectively.

Up Next
With their three-tournament tour of the southeast complete, the Eagles will next compete at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational, March 17-18, on the UT Golf Course in Austin, Texas. The two-day event will be hosted by the University of Texas.
