YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University track & field distance runners and multi athletes earned multiple conference-best marks as they competed at the Jet's Pizza Invitational, hosted by Saginaw Valley, at the SVSU Field House, and the Meyo Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame, at the Loftus Sports Center Friday-Saturday, Jan.31-Feb.1.
Kian Wiles (Hull, England/St. Mary's College) and Samuel Jeffery (Fonthill, Ontario/E.L. Crossley Secondary) led the way, as Wiles ran the Mid-American Conference's (MAC) best mile time in 4:03.26 and Jeffery collected a conference-best 4,924 points in the heptathlon, earning several program top 10 heptathlon marks in the process.
How it Happened – Jet's Pizza Invitational
Friday was highlighted by freshman Shay Clemetson (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) as she earned her first collegiate win in the pentathlon with 3,379 points. Clemetson notched two first-place finishes (60m hurdles & high jump), placed second once (long jump), and third once (shot put) to secure the win. On her way to victory, Clemetson recorded three marks that rank inside the program's top 10 pentathlon leaderboards, most notably in the 60m hurdles, where she clocked the second-fastest time in 8.79. Overall, Clemetson's score ranks as the third-highest this season in the MAC.
After finishing the first day on top of the heptathlon standings, Jeffery finished in second place with a personal-best 4,924 points, the best mark in the MAC. Jeffery etched his name into the program top 10 in both day one and day two only heptathlon scores. His day one mark of 2,825 points is the program's fifth-highest, while his day two score (2,099) serves as the team's seventh-best. Jeffery earned three top 10 heptathlon marks in the process (long jump, high jump, 1000m), with his highest being the 1000m, where he ran the fourth-fastest heptathlon mark in a personal-best 2:47.13.
Other notable performances came from Cason Doolittle (Findlay, Ohio/Liberty Benton), who set a program record in the heptathlon 1000m, finishing first in 2:44.01. He also secured the ninth-best heptathlon 60m hurdles mark, placing second in 8.76.
Freshman Julien Badoo (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) joined Jeffery and Doolittle with a heptathlon top 10 mark in the 1000m. He finished sixth in 2:54.71, ranking seventh in program history.
How it Happened – Meyo Invitational
On Friday, the women's 4000m distance medley relay team of Chloie Musta (Mesick, Mich./Cadillac), Mia Biehl (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing), Sophie Emin (Easton, Pa./Easton Area/Rutgers) and Cora Henderson (Courtice, Ontario/Courtice Secondary) ran the MAC's second fastest time, finishing seventh in 11:52.52.
Lachlan Cornelius (Queensland, Australia/Anglican Church Grammar School) ran to a third place finish out of 20 competitors in the 600m. He finished in a personal-best 1:19.60 and was closely followed by Carson McCoy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Deer Lakes), who placed fourth in 1:19.72.
On Saturday, the men saw strong marks from Wiles and McCoy. Wiles placed second out of 37 student-athletes in the open mile in 4:03.26, a time that stands as the top in the MAC and a personal-best, and McCoy clocked the conference's second-fastest 800m in 1:52.66.
Marta Moreno (Wassenaar, Netherlands/American School of The Hague) led the women on the second day as she raced against elite competition in the 3000m final. Moreno placed 11th out of 27 student-athletes while shattering her previous personal-best by nearly 27 seconds, finishing in 9:18.92. Her time stands as fifth-best in program history and the fourth-fastest in the conference.
