Volleyball Falls in Thursday Match to Ball State

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –  The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team was swept by Ball State University, 3-0, inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center, Thursday, Nov. 6, as the Cardinals secured at least a share of the Mid-American Conference Regular Season Championship with the victory.

Bri Struck (Broadlands, Ill./Heritage/Parkland College) led the team with 10 kills, along with AshleeKay Christensen (Carlisle, Iowa/Carlisle), who recorded 10 digs to mark her second time doing so this season.

Ella Voorhees (Morgantown, W. Va./Morgantown/Southern Miss.) led the team in assists, dishing 12, marking her sixth time securing 10+ assists this season.  

How it Happened
SET ONE | In a close set, Ball State was able to reach 10 points first, 10-8, with the Eagles on its tail. The Cardinals continued to lead the set, reaching 15 points first, 15-10, posting a .370 hitting percentage going into the media timeout. Down by five points, EMU tied the set, 15-15, forcing Ball State to use a timeout. Ball State secured the win for the first set, 25-17, only allowing two points after the media timeout.    
 
SET TWO | With a strong performance early on, EMU led the second set, 7-2, forcing the Cardinals to take their first time out. With five ties and three lead changes, Ball State led the Eagles,16-14, forcing EMU to use its first timeout. The Eagles lost the second set, 25-14, digging a 2-0 deficit in the match.
 
SET THREE | The Eagles reached 10 points first, 11-7, forcing Ball State to use its first timeout. With multiple lead changes throughout the set, the Eagles tied the match, 21-21. Ball State quickly regained control, forcing EMU to take its first timeout, 23-21. The Cardinals swept the Eagles, 3-0. Winning the final set, 25-21.    

Match Notes
» Eastern's record shifted to 12-16 (4-11 MAC) while Ball State's improved to 18-9 (14-1 MAC).
»  Eastern's best offensive set was the third, landing 11 kills off 32 swings with a .250 hitting percentage.
» AshleeKay Christensen recorded her second 10+ digs this season with 10 digs in the match. 
» With one ace in the match, Hatteras Welker (Sunbury, Ohio/Sunbury) has at least one ace in 22-of-28 matches this season. Welker's 22 matches with at least one ace are tied for the third-highest mark in the nation, are the most in the MAC, and are the most of any middle in the country
» Bri Struck recorded the second 10+ kill match of her NCAA Division I career, landing 10 on the day off a .296 hitting percentage. 
» Ella Voorhees led the team in assists with 12, marking her sixth time securing 10+ assists this season.  
 
Historical Notes
» The match marked the 91st between the Eagles and Cardinals. Overall, Eastern holds a 28-63 record facing Ball State and an 18-30 mark when facing it in Ypsilanti. 
» Hatteras Welker is up to 124 blocks on the season, ranking fifth in EMU single-season annals in the modern statistical era (2008-present). She needs 11 more to tie her 2024 total of 135 that ties for second.
» With seven digs tonight, Ella Voorhees is six digs away from reaching 500 in her career.
