Mendez had a career day as she went 2-0 on the court
MIAMISBURG, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team won the doubles point for the fourth consecutive dual to open the season, but was unable to hold off the University of Dayton as the Flyers captured a 4-3 win inside the South Regency Tennis Center in Miamisburg, Ohio, Jan. 26. The Eagles (2-2) got a career day from Regina Mendez, who won her first doubles match in dual competition while also securing a victory in singles play against the Flyers (3-1).
"Our doubles point continues to be a positive for us," Head Coach Ryan Kucera said. "Marta Komar and Regina Mendez were able to find chemistry quickly and put together a gutsy performance to win their match and clinch the doubles point for us. Unfortunately, we didn't refocus well in singles and got ourselves into a hole we couldn't quite climb out of."
How It Happened
The Eagles opened the dual doing what they have all year by winning the doubles point for the fourth time in four tries. Iva Daneva (Kavadarci, North Macedonia/DSU Sportska Akademija) and Viki Hazmukova (Skvorec, Czechia/Skoly Brezova) got things started as they took the win at No. 2, 6-2, before the No. 1 duo of Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland/Sopocka (Sopot) Tennis Academy/Wayne State) and Mendez (Los Cabos, Mexico/Picacho McGregor) stepped in and grabbed a 6-4 win to clinch the point and stake EMU to a 1-0 lead.
The Flyers tied the dual with a win at No. 2 singles before Daneva was victorious at No. 4 with a 6-3, 6-1 decision to return EMU to the lead, 2-1. But the hosts would go on to win the next three points with victories at No. 3, No. 6, and No. 1, to clinch the team win with a 4-2 lead. Mendez closed out the dual with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5 to claim the Eagles' third point in a 4-3 loss.
