Eastern sees its run of consecutive home wins snapped at 13
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team battled to the end, but was unable to climb out of an early deficit as the Eagles fell to visiting Oakland University, 5-2, Feb. 1, at the Chippewa Club in Ypsilanti. The Eagles (2-3) saw their 13-match home winning streak end with the loss to the Golden Grizzlies (1-2).
"We definitely finished strong today, (we) just dug ourselves too big of a hole," Head Coach Ryan Kucera said. "I am proud of the way we fought to the end, but we need to make it a priority to bring better energy and urgency from the start of the match."
For the first time this year, the Eagles did not win the doubles point as wins at No. 1 and No. 2 gave the visitors an early 1-0 lead. All three matches ended in a 6-4 scoreline with the duo of Lara Diaz Zayas (Mar de Ajo, Argentina/SEADEA) and Prerna Vichare (Mumbai, India/Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics) winning at No. 3 before Oakland secured the point with it win at No. 2.
The Golden Grizzlies extended their lead to 3-0 with wins at No. 1 and No. 4 singles before Kseniia Saenko (Voronezh, Russia/Gymnasium 2) secured a three-set victory, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1, at No. 5 singles. Despite the win, OU secured the team win with a victory at No. 2 before adding a fifth point with a win at No. 3. The final match of the day went to the Eagles with Regina Mendez (Los Cabos, Mexico/Picacho McGregor) claiming a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 win at No. 6.
