Russell and Szadorski Shine as Swim & Dive Flys Past Toledo, 175-117

With the win, the Eagles are off to a 4-1 start and 2-0 start in Mid-American Conference competition

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Kiersten Russell and Abby Szadorski each swam to three event wins as the Eastern Michigan University swim and dive team soared past the Toledo Rockets, 175-117, at the Jones Natatorium Friday, Jan. 17.
The Eagles now hold a 4-1 record in dual meets and 2-0 record in Mid-American Conference competition for the first time since the 2019-20 campaign.
How it Happened: Swim
The Eagles were led by Russell (Clinton, Mich./Saline), who earned three first-place finishes. She first won the 200-yard freestyle in a season-best 1:53.39, before winning the 50-yard freestyle (23.95) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:03.43).
Szadorski (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East) joined Russell with three event wins in the meet. She started the night by swimming the second leg of the first place 400-yard medley relay which finished in 3:51.26. She went on to win the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.54, and ended her night claiming gold in the 200-yard IM in 2:13.78.
Nehir Oz (Istanbul, Turkey/Cevre) was also a bright spot in the pool, winning both the 1000-yard freestyle in a personal-best 10:20.00 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:05.77. Oz also secured a personal-best time in the 200-yard IM, touching the wall in 2:09.93. Moreover, her 10:20.00 in the 1000-yard freestyle qualified her for the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association National Invitational Championships (CSCAA NIC).
The 1000-freestyle saw Green and White fill all three podium spots, after Oz in first came Morgan Hofmeister (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) in second in 10:43.97, followed by Ashley George (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha) in third in 10:47.34.
Azra Umut (Istanbul, Turkey/Fenerbahce School) grabbed two wins on the night. She swam the opening leg of the first place 400-yard medley relay team, before winning the 100-yard backstroke in 57.21.
How it Happened: Dive
The Eastern divers started their day with a sweep in the three-meter, as freshman Taityn Speier (Fairfax, Va./WT Woodson) earned the first win of her career with a score of 264.38. She was followed by fellow freshman Aisling Gutierrez (New Kent, Va./New Kent), who placed second, scoring 246.23. Rounding out the point scorers in the three-meet was Rebekah Knapp (Mesa, Ariz./Skyline), who placed third with 238.23.
Eastern also claimed the one-meter event with Knapp placing first as she posted a score of 278.25. Speier built off her first-place finish in the three-meter, tabbing another podium finish in the one-meter with a 242.85 total.
