Gymnastics Scores 195.125 to Win Four-Team Golden Girls Classic

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team won the Golden Girls' Classic against Mid-American Conference opponents Ball State University and Northern Illinois University, and out-of-conference opponent Winona State University Friday, Jan. 17, with 195.125 points inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center.
Eastern bested its opponents of 195.000 for Ball State, 193.275 for Northern Illinois, and 189.450 by Winona State. By defeating the three schools, it is the first time that EMU has started 4-0 in a season since at least 2003.
On top of posting their best season-opening score since 2003 with a score of 194.925 against Bowling Green, Jan. 12, the Eagles followed that up with their season-best total of 195.125, Friday night.
EMU finished the meet with seven personal bests across the board, one in vault, two in bars, three on the beam, and one in floor.
How It Happened
Raisa Boris (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center) highlighted the night for Eastern Michigan, finishing with a season-best score of 39.125 to finish first place in the all-around category. She topped second-place finisher Hannah Ruthberg of Ball State, who finished with a 38.500 overall.
On the vault, Eastern Michigan was led by Abby Brushwood (State College, Pa./State College Area), who recorded a season-best 9.775 for the Eagles as they finished with a total score of 48.550. The sophomore finished ahead of Alana Fisher (Athens, Ala./Alabama Connections Academy) and Genae Daniel (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike), who recorded a 9.750 and a 9.700, respectively.
On the uneven bars, Eastern Michigan had five gymnasts tally at least a 9.70, led by Boris, who had a 9.825, which tied for her season-best in the event. Right behind her was Gwendelyn Cantu (Joilet, Ill./Providence Catholic) who had a personal best of 9.775. Also tallying at least a 9.70 was Keeley Kohler (Davison, Mich./Powers Catholic), Kyrie Lowe (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista), and Ella Chemotti (Canton, Mich./Canton) who had a 9.750, and a 9.725 for the latter two. The Eagles finished with 48.825 points on the uneven bars.
Next for Eastern was the balance beam, scoring 48.775 as a team. Chemotti led the way with a season-best of 9.775. Behind her was Katin Childress (Prosper, Texas/Prosper) who had a 9.750. Boris, Lowe, and Fisher were the other competitors for the Eagles who had at least a 9.7, with 9.725s for Boris and Fisher and a 9.700 for Lowe.
To conclude the meet, EMU was on floor. In this event, the Eagles were led by Priya Karle (Canton, Mass./Canton) and Brushwood, who each had a 9.850 to conclude their second meet of the season. The 9.850 was a career-best for Karle and a season-best for Brushwood.
