E-Club to Induct Four into the EMU Athletic Hall of Fame

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University E-Club Alumni Chapter, the official varsity athletic letterwinners club, has announced the addition of four new members into the E-Club Athletic Hall of Fame. The Class of 2024 will be honored at the Hall of Fame ceremony Friday, Sept. 20, at 6:30 p.m.
The Class of 2024 includes: men's basketball icon Kory Hallas, women's basketball All-American Tavelyn James, former MLB pitcher Matt Shoemaker, and women's track star Gina Tempro. Former men's basketball letter winner Jack Brusewitz will also be receiving the Ron Oestrike Distinguished Service Award for his dedication and support of EMU Athletics and the E-Club.
This year's class will mark the 48th anniversary of the E-Club Athletic Hall of Fame with a dinner followed by a ceremony at 6:30 p.m. inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center. The Class of 2024 will then be recognized during the EMU football game Saturday, Sept. 21, against St. Francis University (Pa.)

Kory Hallas
Men's Basketball: Graduated in 2001...Four-year letter winner as a member of the EMU Men's Basketball Team from 1988-92...Season leading scorer of the 1991-92 team with 429 points, averaging 20 points per game...Earned All-Mid-American Conference First Team honors in 1991-92 and honorable mention in 1989-90...Member of the 1990-91 EMU Sweet 16 Team...Ranks 13th in the 1,000 Point Club with 1,464 points...Sits at ninth all-time with 743 rebounds...Was the season-leading rebounder in 1991-92 and 1989-90 with 226 and 201 respectively...Ranks in the EMU all-time top 10 record books with field goals made (567), field goal attempts (1,229) and games played (122)...Went on to play professionally in Spain and Europe and represented Team Canada at the 1994 World Championships and led the team in scoring...Founder of the Naismith 3-on-3 Tournament in his hometown of Ottawa, Canada...Honored in 2023 with his own star on the Dr. James Naismith Canada's Walk of Fame Hometown Stars.
Tavelyn B. James
Women's Basketball: Graduated in 2012...Four-year letter winner for the EMU Women's Basketball Team from 2008-12...Named to the Mid-American Conference Freshman Team in 2008-09...Recognized three-times as First Team All-MAC...Earned MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week twice and received All-MAC Academic Team honors in 2009-10...Selected eight times as MAC Player of the Week during her EMU career...Led the team to the 2012 MAC Championship as a senior...Earned MAC All-Tournament Team honors twice (2010-11 and 2011-12)...Named MAC Tournament MVP and selected as the MAC Player of the Year in 2011-12...Named Associated Press All-American Honorable Mention and received WBCA All-American Honorable Mention and was selected as an All-Region Nominee (2011-12)...Recipient of the 2012 Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award, presented annually by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame to the nation's outstanding female collegian 5'8" and under who has excelled both athletically and academically...Became the first EMU and MAC student-athlete to represent the USA women's basketball team in the 2011 Pan American Games, held in Guadalajara, Mexico...Finished her career with 463 free throws, 863 field goals, 291 three-point baskets, and an EMU all-time record among both men's and women's basketball programs, 2,470 points...Holds many top-10 MAC and EMU individual and career records in the offensive categories...Played professionally for five seasons representing the WNBA, Israel, Slovenia, France, Sweden, and Iceland...Named to the 2023 inaugural class of the George Gervin GameAbove Center Arena Ring of Honor.
Matt Shoemaker
Baseball: Graduated Cum Laude in 2008...Three-year letter winner for the EMU Baseball Team from 2006-08...In 2007, he saved 14 games for EMU, and earned All-Mid-American Conference Second Team honors and repeated this conference recognition in 2008...Tied for fifth in NCAA Division I in saves for the 2007 season, setting the EMU single-season record in the process...Earned Academic All-MAC in 2008...Graduated from EMU after his junior year, forgoing his final year of college eligibility...Ranked 18th in career ERA at 4.33...Played for the USA national baseball team in the 2011 Baseball World Cup and 2011 Pan American Games, winning the silver medal...Signed with the Angels as a free agent, and pitched in Minor League Baseball through 2013, when he made his MLB debut...Was named the American League (AL) Rookie of the Month and Pitcher of the Month in August 2014, and finished second in AL Rookie of the Year Award voting after the season...Has pitched in parts of nine big-league seasons for the Los Angeles Angels, Toronto Blue Jays and Minnesota Twins...Professionally in the MLB, he had a 46-41 win-loss record, 4.24 ERA, and 580 strikeouts.

Women's Track and Field: Competed for the EMU Women's Track and Field indoor and outdoor teams from 1981-85...Six-time Mid-American Conference Individual Champion in the 100m and 60m meter hurdles (two indoor and four outdoor)...Member of three MAC Championship relay teams: 4x200, 4x100, and Sprint Medley Relay Teams (one indoor and two outdoor)...Has a total of nine MAC Championship crowns...Earned outdoor All-MAC First Team honor six times...Appears in EMU's all-time top-10 record books twice as an individual in the indoor 60m hurdles (8.36) and the 100m hurdles (13.49)...Holds the WMU Read Fieldhouse record for the 55m hurdles with 7.90 seconds set in 1984...Claimed NCAA All-America status in 1982 for the outdoor 100m high hurdles...Member of the 1982 Outdoor Track and Field MAC Championship Team.
