YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The mission of Eastern Michigan University Athletics extends well beyond competition. While EMU student-athletes spent the 2025-26 academic year pursuing championships, earning academic honors, and representing the Green and White at venues across the country, they also continued to make a meaningful impact on campus and in the surrounding community. Through leadership development initiatives, community engagement programs, mental health awareness efforts, financial literacy education, and service opportunities, EMU student-athletes demonstrated the values that define the department's commitment to developing leaders both during and after their collegiate careers.

The result was a year that highlighted what it means to represent Eastern Michigan University.

A CULTURE RECOGNIZED
The strongest affirmation of the department's values came from the Mid-American Conference itself.

For the first time in school history, Eastern Michigan earned the MAC Institutional Sportsmanship Award, an honor that recognizes the conference member that best exemplifies sportsmanship, integrity, and respect throughout the academic year.

The award reflected the collective efforts of student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and support staff across every program. While championships and victories often define athletic success, the recognition served as a reminder that how programs conduct themselves remains equally important.

For Eastern, the honor represented years of intentional work to create a culture centered on accountability, respect, and leadership.

Those values were evident throughout the year in the actions of student-athletes across campus and within the community.

LEADERSHIP THROUGH STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVOCACY
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee once again played a central role in shaping the student-athlete experience.

Serving as a voice for more than 450 student-athletes, SAAC worked throughout the year to support initiatives designed to educate, empower, and engage its peers. Committee members collaborated with campus partners, organized awareness campaigns, and participated in programs to strengthen the overall student-athlete experience.

One of the group's most impactful efforts came during National Hazing Prevention Week.

Student-athlete leaders partnered with EMU Fraternity and Sorority Life to participate in bystander intervention training. The program focused on recognizing potentially harmful situations, understanding how to intervene safely, and creating environments where individuals feel supported and respected.

The training encouraged participants to think critically about leadership responsibilities and provided practical tools applicable both within athletic programs and across campus life.

More importantly, it reinforced Eastern's commitment to fostering a culture in which every student-athlete feels valued and supported.

PRIORITIZING STUDENT WELL-BEING
Throughout the year, Eastern Athletics continued to emphasize the importance of mental health and overall wellness.

As conversations surrounding mental health continue to evolve throughout collegiate athletics, the department remains committed to providing resources and opportunities that support student-athletes' well-being.

Those efforts were particularly visible during MAC Mental Health Awareness Week.

More than 60 student-athletes participated in activities designed to encourage open dialogue, reduce stigma, and promote healthy habits. Programming included educational sessions with counseling professionals, discussions focused on mental wellness, and opportunities for student-athletes to connect with one another outside of competition.

The week's activities reflected a broader departmental philosophy that recognizes the importance of supporting the whole student-athlete.

Success in athletics requires more than physical preparation. It also requires emotional resilience, healthy relationships, and access to resources that allow student-athletes to thrive both personally and professionally.

Eastern's continued investment in mental health programming demonstrated its commitment to helping student-athletes navigate those challenges.

PREPARING FOR LIFE AFTER ATHLETICS
One of the department's primary goals is to ensure that student-athletes leave Eastern prepared for success long after their playing careers conclude.

Throughout the 2025-26 academic year, numerous initiatives focused on developing practical life skills and preparing student-athletes for future careers.

Financial literacy remained a major area of emphasis.

Through a partnership with Eastern Michigan University Credit Union, student-athletes participated in a series of educational workshops focused on budgeting, saving, investing, credit management, and long-term financial planning.

Women's rowing and track and field student-athletes participated in several sessions that encouraged thoughtful financial decision-making and provided tools to help them navigate future financial responsibilities.

The workshops offered valuable lessons that extended far beyond athletics and reflected the department's commitment to developing well-rounded individuals.

At the same time, Eastern continued to expand career-readiness opportunities through its partnership with Podium X.

Student-athletes participated in professional development sessions focused on personal branding, networking, interviewing, and career preparation. The workshops challenged participants to think proactively about life after graduation while providing practical guidance on building professional relationships and preparing for future opportunities.

For many student-athletes, the programs served as an important bridge between their athletic experiences and future professional aspirations.

DEVELOPING FUTURE LEADERS
Leadership development remained another important pillar of the student-athlete experience.

Throughout the year, Eastern Athletics provided opportunities for student-athletes to grow as leaders within their teams, on campus, and within their communities.

One such opportunity came through a department-wide presentation led by Dr. Greenfield.

The session focused on themes of leadership, inclusion, vulnerability, and team culture. Student-athletes were challenged to examine their roles within their teams and consider how leadership can influence the experiences of those around them.

Rather than focusing solely on positional leadership, the discussion emphasized everyday actions that contribute to healthy team environments and strong organizational cultures.

The message resonated across programs and reinforced the department's broader commitment to character development.

BUILDING CONNECTIONS IN THE COMMUNITY
While leadership development remained a priority, community engagement continued to serve as one of the most visible expressions of Eastern Athletics' mission.

Throughout the year, student-athletes devoted time to programs designed to strengthen relationships with local schools and community organizations.

One of the department's most meaningful partnerships continued through Reading with the Eagles.

The program connected EMU student-athletes with students at Ypsilanti International Elementary School and provided opportunities for mentorship, encouragement, and relationship building. Through classroom visits and reading activities, student-athletes served as positive role models while helping inspire the next generation of learners.

The partnership expanded during the spring through Sports Day at Ypsilanti International Elementary School.

Student-athletes from football, women's golf, rowing, and cheer and dance spent time working directly with local students through a series of athletic activities and skill stations. The event emphasized teamwork, sportsmanship, and physical activity while creating opportunities for meaningful interaction between EMU student-athletes and members of the community.

For the elementary students, the experience offered a chance to learn from collegiate athletes.

For Eastern's student-athletes, it provided another opportunity to give back to a community that consistently supports the university.

FOOTBALL'S IMPACT BEYOND THE FIELD
Among the department's many outreach initiatives, two football programs once again stood out for their impact.

The fifth annual Empty the Nest event brought together 23 senior football student-athletes and successful EMU alumni for an evening of mentorship and networking.

The event was designed to help student-athletes prepare for life after graduation by connecting them with professionals across a variety of industries. Participants discussed career paths, workplace expectations, leadership lessons, and strategies for navigating life after college athletics.

The conversations provided valuable insight while helping student-athletes begin building professional networks that will serve them long after their playing days have ended.

The football program also hosted one of the department's most cherished traditions.

Victory Day returned to Rynearson Stadium for the 12th consecutive year, bringing together individuals with cognitive and physical impairments for a memorable day centered on inclusion, celebration, and community.

With the support of EMU student-athletes, coaches, and staff, participants experienced the excitement of game day as they scored touchdowns and celebrated achievements on the field.

The event has become a hallmark of Eastern Athletics' community engagement efforts and continues to embody the department's commitment to creating meaningful experiences for others.
