YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Success within Eastern Michigan University Athletics has long been measured by more than wins and losses. While EMU student-athletes continued to make headlines in competition throughout the 2025-26 academic year, some of the department's most impressive accomplishments took place in classrooms, laboratories, research symposiums, and academic support centers across campus. The year was highlighted by record-breaking grade-point averages, national academic recognition, conference honors, and continued success in key NCAA academic benchmarks, reinforcing EMU's commitment to developing champions in every aspect of the student-athlete experience.

That commitment produced one of the most successful academic years in the department's history.

SETTING A NEW STANDARD
The defining moment of the year came following the Winter 2026 semester when Eastern Michigan student-athletes established the highest cumulative grade-point average in department history.
The department finished the semester with a cumulative GPA of 3.517, surpassing the previous record of 3.504. The accomplishment marked the seventh consecutive semester in which EMU Athletics set a new all-time cumulative GPA record, a remarkable run that speaks to the consistency and dedication of student-athletes across all sports.

The achievement was significant not only because of the number itself, but because of what it represented. Academic excellence has become a defining characteristic of Eastern Michigan Athletics, and the latest record provided further evidence that the department's culture continues to move in the right direction.

The success extended throughout the entire department.

For the first time in school history, every athletic program finished the semester with a cumulative GPA above 3.0. Meanwhile, student-athletes combined for a 3.480 semester GPA while 388 student-athletes earned semester GPAs of 3.0 or higher. An additional 411 student-athletes maintained cumulative GPAs above 3.0, representing nearly 90 percent of all student-athletes.

Thirty-three Eagles earned perfect 4.0 GPAs during the semester.

The numbers reflected a department-wide commitment to academic achievement that stretched far beyond a handful of teams or individuals.

TEAM SUCCESS ACROSS THE DEPARTMENT
While every program contributed to the department's success, several teams established new benchmarks of their own.

Volleyball led the way by posting a program-record semester GPA of 3.832. The Eagles also set a program-record cumulative GPA of 3.811, continuing a trend of excellence synonymous with the program's culture.

The achievement reflected the balance required of today's student-athletes. Throughout the year, Eastern competitors managed rigorous travel schedules, demanding practice commitments, and high-level competition while continuing to excel academically.

The results were evident throughout the department as student-athletes consistently demonstrated that success in competition and success in the classroom are not mutually exclusive goals.

NCAA METRICS HIGHLIGHT CONTINUED SUCCESS
Eastern's academic accomplishments were also reflected in the NCAA's most recognized measurements of student-athlete success.

When the NCAA released its annual Graduation Success Rate report, EMU once again ranked among the conference leaders. Three programs, men's golf, gymnastics, and women's swimming and diving, earned perfect Graduation Success Rates.

Several additional programs posted impressive results, including football, women's basketball, soccer, and tennis, each finishing above the 86 percent mark.

Collectively, the department recorded an overall Graduation Success Rate of 85 percent.

Perhaps most impressive was the consistency behind the number. The report marked the 11th consecutive year Eastern Michigan posted a Graduation Success Rate of at least 80 percent. Over the last decade, the department has steadily improved its academic outcomes while continuing to compete at a high level within the Mid-American Conference.

The NCAA's Academic Progress Rate report provided another indication of the department's success.

Men's cross country and women's golf earned perfect multiyear APR scores of 1,000, while eight programs recorded scores of 990 or higher. Women's lacrosse posted a 997, gymnastics recorded a 995, soccer finished at 993, tennis earned a 991, men's golf posted a 990, and volleyball narrowly missed the mark with a 989.

Single-year APR data proved equally impressive. Five programs earned perfect scores of 1,000, demonstrating the continued commitment of student-athletes, coaches, and academic support staff to academic progress and retention.

HONORING EXCELLENCE
As team accomplishments continued to grow, individual student-athletes also earned recognition for their achievements.

Baseball's Michael Pfeiffer and lacrosse's Annika Wozney were selected as Eastern Michigan's recipients of the Mid-American Conference Medal of Excellence, the league's highest academic honor.

Presented annually to one male and one female student-athlete from each institution, the award recognizes individuals who have excelled academically, athletically, and as leaders within their communities.

For Pfeiffer and Wozney, the recognition served as the culmination of years of dedication both on the field and in the classroom.

Academic excellence was also recognized by the conference throughout the year.

Eastern student-athletes earned six MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors, including recognitions for Hatteras Welker, Jake McEachern, Kian Wiles, Kelsea Dague, Tracy Grollman, and Ty Stecko.

Their accomplishments embodied the balance required to succeed at the highest levels of Division I athletics.

The department's depth was further illustrated through its conference and national academic honors.

EMU student-athletes earned 158 Academic All-MAC selections during the academic year, while another 50 Eagles earned CSC Academic All-District recognition.

The honors spanned nearly every program and demonstrated the breadth of academic success across the department.

FOOTBALL CONTINUES TO LEAD
Few programs exemplified academic achievement more than football.

When the National Football Foundation announced its 2026 Hampshire Honor Society class, Eastern Michigan led the Mid-American Conference with 14 selections.

The honor recognizes football student-athletes who maintain exceptional academic records while serving as significant contributors on the field throughout their collegiate careers.

The 14 honorees represented the largest group in program history and marked the eighth time in the last nine seasons that Eastern produced at least five recipients.

The accomplishment reflected the culture of accountability that continues to define the program and further demonstrated that academic achievement remains a priority throughout the organization.

RESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIP
The impact of Eastern student-athletes extended beyond traditional classroom success.

Five student-athletes were selected to participate in the university's Undergraduate Research Symposium, one of the premier academic events on campus. Volleyball's Ella Grasson, soccer's Sarah Van Euwen, swimmer Tristen Mina, gymnast Brooke Maycroft, and lacrosse standout Annika Wozney presented research projects alongside some of the university's top undergraduate scholars.

Selection for the symposium requires faculty nomination and endorsement from academic programs, making participation a significant achievement in its own right.

Their involvement highlighted the diverse interests of Eastern student-athletes and demonstrated their ability to contribute meaningful scholarship while competing at the Division I level.

SUPPORTING STUDENT SUCCESS
Behind every academic achievement stands a network of individuals committed to supporting student-athlete success.

Throughout the year, Student-Athlete Support Services continued to play a vital role in helping Eagles navigate the challenges of balancing athletics and academics.

That commitment to professional development extended beyond student-athletes themselves.

Graduate assistant, Grace Rochester, represented Eastern Michigan at the NCAA Emerging Leaders Seminar in Indianapolis, a prestigious professional development opportunity designed for young professionals pursuing careers in intercollegiate athletics.

Her participation reflected the department's investment in developing future leaders both within athletics and beyond.
