YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The creation of the state-of-the-art Eastern Michigan University Rowing Course at Ford Lake is set to bring near-immediate dividends as USRowing has selected Eastern as the host of World University Championships USRowing Training Camp. Eagles Head Coach Kemp Savage will be coaching the women's team, which includes EMU student-athlete Lily Wilhelm.

After training on Ford Lake from June 5-30, American student-athletes will head to Rotterdam, Netherlands, to compete July 3-6 against student-athletes from around the globe in the World University Championships at Willem-Alexander Baan, which opened in 2012 and hosted the 2016 World Championships.

Savage last coached the United States squad at the World University Championships in 2018 in Shanghai, China. Savage led the US V8+ to a bronze medal at the international event, while the V4+ earned a fifth-place finish. The lightweight-double sculls finished 11th overall. Current EMU Assistant Coach and former Eagle student-athlete Delaney McGuire competed under Savage';s guide in the lightweight-double sculls.

Wilhelm (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville/Butler) has been a mainstay in the 1V8 each of the last two seasons, highlighted by All-Coastal Athletic Association honors in 2023.

USRowing has been at the forefront of the praise for the EMU Rowing Course at Ford Lake as Rich Cacioppo, Executive Director of USRowing, emphasized the transformative potential of the venue, likening it to iconic regatta sites steeped in history and tradition. "Great venues have character," Cacioppo remarked. "They reflect the pride of a place that inspires competitors and instills memories in all those who visit. The EMU Rowing Course at Ford Lake has the makings of an iconic venue—one that will leave a lasting legacy for generations to come."

At the time of the course unveiling, Ypsilanti Township Supervisor Brenda Stumbo reflected on the transformative impact of the project, stating, "We are on the map, and we stand tall with our partners. Together, we have turned aspirations into achievements, laying the foundation for a vibrant future;" while Sarah Miller, President and CEO of Destination Ann Arbor, echoed Stumbo's sentiments, emphasizing the economic and cultural significance of the rowing course. "This initiative underscores our commitment to fostering a vibrant sports culture and driving tourism," Miller remarked. "The EMU Rowing Course at Ford Lake positions Ypsilanti as a hub for athletic excellence and showcases our community's spirit of innovation and collaboration."

"It has been such a pleasure to have the help and backing of EMU Athletics, Ypsilanti Township, The Ann Arbor Sports Comission, and The Marriott Eagle Crest," Savage said. "Their belief and investment in rowing on Ford Lake is invaluable as we continue to make Southeastern Michigan an International Rowing hub."
